All you need to know about Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini amid strong transfer links to Newcastle United.

Newcastle United have struggled in the summer transfer window after missing out on several top targets, but there might finally be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Eddie Howe might have missed out on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Joao Pedro, but Newcastle now appear to be closing in on Anthony Elanga as a £55m bid has been made.

James Trafford also looks to be arriving soon and Newcastle now seem to be making progress on signing Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini.

Here’s all you need to know about him.

Who is Giorgio Scalvini?

After spending time in his youth at Palazzolo and Brescia, Scalvini was picked up by Atalanta when he was still in primary school.

He climbed through the ranks at the Serie A club, winning an Under-19 trophy along the way, before making his debut at the age of 17 in October 2021 against Udinese.

By the time the season finished, Scalvini had established himself as a regular in the starting XI and impressed in Gian Gasperini’s side.

Scalvini helped his side win the Europa League in 2024, beating the undefeated Bayer Leverkusen in the final.

Additionally, he made his Italy debut in June 2022 and has picked up eight caps for the Azzurri.

For his young age, Scalvini has suffered some serious injuries with a cruciate ligament tear and a shoulder injury, along with other niggles, seeing him miss 65 games already.

Giorgio Scalvini to Newcastle United transfer news

Newcastle were first linked with Scalvini over a year ago when it was reported they were scouting the Italian.

Speaking to Geordie Boot Boys last summer, transfer expert Graeme Baily labelled Scalvini as ‘outstanding.’

He said: “Newcastle do spend a lot of time watching Atalanta, so I think Scalvini will be on the list,” he said.

“They’ve looked at him quite a bit – Manchester United like him too. Outstanding young player, and they’re obviously watching Ederson there so they’ve seen a lot of him because they’ve been watching Atalanta quite a lot.

“He’ll be one to keep an eye on.”

PSR restrictions meant Newcastle didn’t make any big moves in 2024 but they have more room to spend this year and appear to be reigniting their interest in Scalvini.

Newcastle fans want Scalvini signed and the club are said to value him at £30m.

Giorgio Scalvini age

Scalvini was born on December 11, 2003, in Chiari, Italy.

As of July 2025, he is still just 21 years old. Signing such a young centre-back is a smart move for Newcastle for the now and the future.

Though Newcastle have a strong back line, their top centre-backs, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn, are both well into their 30s and a succession plan will be required. Scalvini might be just that.

How tall is Giorgio Scalvini?

Scalvini stands at a towering 6’4″ tall.

Though not quite the giant that Burn is, Scalvini is a perfect height to play in the heart of defence and deal with set pieces.

It also makes him a threat in the opposite box, with five goals and five assists for Atalanta in his career.

Giorgio Scalvini salary

According to SalarySport, Scalvini earns a fairly minimal (for footballers, anyway) £25,000 a week. That works out at £1.3m a year.

If that’s accurate, that would place Scalvini’s current salary near the very bottom of Newcastle’s earners.

As a result, the club could offer him a substantial pay rise without blowing their wage bill out of the water.
