First-Team Squad

The Newcastle United squad for the 2022/23 Premier League season under manager Eddie Howe consists of 42 players. The Magpies’ senior fold features six goalkeepers, 14 defenders, 15 midfielders and seven forwards, including those currently away from St James’ Park in loan transfers.

Newcastle United goalkeepers

Martin Dubravka

Newcastle United secured the permanent signing of Martin Dubravka in 2018 for £4m after an initial loan move from Sparta Prague. The Slovakian would remain the Toon’s No1 until the 2022/23 season.

Loris Karius

Howe signed Loris Karius to an initial short-term contract at Newcastle in 2022 after his release from Liverpool. But the German goalkeeper later extended his terms to stay at the club until June 2023.

Nick Pope

Newcastle signed Nick Pope in a bargain £12m move in June 2022 after enduring relegation into the Championship with Burnley. He instantly took over as Howe’s No1 and has been an essential player.

Karl Darlow (on loan to Hull City)

Newcastle signed Karl Darlow from Nottingham Forest in 2014. The goalkeeper spent the next year on loan at the City Ground before becoming a vital squad player. But he is now away on loan at Hull City.

Mark Gillespie

Newcastle signed Mark Gillespie following his release from Motherwell in 2020 to add depth to their goalkeeping department. It was a return to the club for the boyhood Magpies fan and academy gem.

Dan Langley (on loan to Spennymoor Town F.C)

Newcastle awarded youth gem Dan Langley his first professional contract during July 2019. He later made his non-competitive senior debut in July 2021 and is also now on loan with Spennymoor Town.

Newcastle United defenders

Kieran Trippier

Newcastle put to good use their new Saudi-backed resources in January 2022 to sign Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid. The £12m swoop has been transformative for the Toon and he is a real leader.

Ciaran Clark (on loan to Sheffield United)

Aston Villa sold Ciaran Clark to Newcastle in 2016 for £5m. He would be crucial as the Toon returned to the Premier League. But the defender is now at Sheffield United on loan until his contract expires.

Paul Dummett

Paul Dummett joined the academy fold at Newcastle aged just nine way back in 2000. The defender later enjoyed his senior debut in 2013. While he has now played in more than 200 first-team games.

Sven Botman

Newcastle secured a £35m transfer with LOSC Lille to sign Sven Botman in 2022 as Howe viewed the Dutchman as his top centre-half target. He has since been an integral presence in a resilient defence.

Fabian Schar

Newcastle triggered a £3m release clause to sign Fabian Schar from Deportivo de la Coruna in 2018. Rafa Benitez’s raid has often proven to be a truly superb bargain for the Magpies in the years since.

Jamaal Lascelles

Beside Darlow, Newcastle signed Jamaal Lascelles from Nottingham Forest in 2014 in a £7m double deal. The centre-half would go on to later become the Toon’s captain under Benitez in August 2016.

Matt Ritchie

Benitez paid AFC Bournemouth £12m to sign Matt Ritchie in 2016 after Newcastle dropped into the Championship. The winger would prove to be a versatile operator and a creative threat on Tyneside.

Jamal Lewis

Newcastle paid Norwich City £15m, rising to £20m, to sign Jamal Lewis under Steve Bruce in 2020. But the left-back has regularly struggled to establish himself as the club’s top choice in the position.

Matt Targett

Howe paid Aston Villa £15m to retain Matt Targett in 2022 after his impressive run of form whilst on loan. He proved to be an ever-reliable option for the Magpies at left-back and always offered his all.

Emil Krafth

Newcastle paid Amiens £5m to sign Emil Krafth in 2020. The Sweden international has been a solid squad player for the Magpies since. But his versatility has often been his best quality with the Toon.

Javier Manquillo

Benitez spent £4.5m on Javier Manquillo in 2017 to see that the right-back remained in the Premier League. He had spent the previous season on loan from Atletico Madrid with their rivals, Sunderland.

Harrison Ashby

West Ham United sold Harrison Ashby to Newcastle in January 2023 for £3m in a deadline day deal. The promising full-back was otherwise due to be out of contract with the Hammers come June 2023.

Dan Burn

Newcastle improved Howe’s defence through a £13m transfer with Brighton for Dan Burn in January 2022. The towering centre-half has also proven to be a solid operator for the Magpies as a left-back.

Kell Watts (on loan to Peterborough United)

Kell Watts signed his first professional contract at Newcastle in 2018. But he only lives on the fringes of their first-team. He is also now on loan at League One team Peterborough for the 2022/23 season.

Newcastle United midfielders

Matty Longstaff

Matty Longstaff enjoyed a sensational breakthrough when he fired Newcastle’s winning goal against Manchester United on his bow in October 2019. But he is now only a fringe player at St James’ Park.

Joelinton

Newcastle broke their club record to sign Joelinton from Hoffenheim as a £40m striker back in 2019 for Bruce. But he could never live up to the price tag before Howe moved the Brazilian into midfield.

Isaac Hayden (on loan to Norwich City)

Newcastle signed Isaac Hayden from Arsenal in 2016 for a bargain £2.5m as a 21-year-old. He would go on to become a key player on Tyneside before an injury preceded a loan transfer to Norwich City.

Jeff Hendrick (on loan to Reading)

Bruce added Jeff Hendrick to his squad at Newcastle in 2020 after Burnley released the midfielder. It was hoped the Irishman would improve their creativity but he often struggled to offer a key impact.

Ryan Fraser

Bruce took advantage of Ryan Fraser leaving Bournemouth as a free agent whilst Newcastle boss in 2020. But the winger has regularly struggled to show the creativity he offered the Cherries for years.

Jacob Murphy

Newcastle splashed £12m to sign Jacob Murphy as a highly-rated youngster from Norwich in 2017. The winger has only served as a squad player around loans to West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday.

Miguel Almiron

Benitez broke Newcastle’s transfer record in January 2019 to sign Miguel Almiron from MLS outfit Atlanta United for £21m. He has cut a creative threat and enjoyed a career-best season in 2022/23.

Joe Willock

Newcastle paid Arsenal £25m to sign Joe Willock in 2021 after a summer-long chase by Bruce for the midfielder. He had earlier registered a stunning seven goals over seven straight games whilst on loan.

Elliot Anderson

Newcastle gave Elliot Anderson his first professional contract in 2019 after nine years in the Toon’s academy. The creative midfielder has since shown sublime vision during his loan with Bristol Rovers.

Sean Longstaff

Sean Longstaff enjoyed instant success following his senior breakthrough for Newcastle in 2018. But a posterior cruciate ligament injury limited his growth and he did not refine his form until 2022/23.

Bruno Guimaraes

Lyon sold Bruno Guimaraes to Newcastle in January 2022 for £35m, plus £6.5m in add-ons. The deal was transformative for the Toon as Howe welcomed a potential world-class player to St James’ Park.

Lucas De Bolle (on loan to Hamilton Academical)

Newcastle awarded Lucas de Bolle his first professional contract in 2021 before renewing his deal in 2022. The midfielder put pen to paper until June 2024 before joining Hamilton Academical on loan.

Niall Brookwell (on loan to Darlington)

Newcastle raided Liverpool’s academy to sign Niall Brookwell as a free agent in 2020. He is now on loan to Darlington in non-league until May 2023 striving to establish his first-team role under Howe.

Joe White (on loan to Exeter City)

Joe White joined the academy set-up at Newcastle in 2016 before he turned professional just three years later. The Toon also extended his deal in 2022 to keep the talent on loan to Exeter until 2025.

Jay Turner-Cooke (on loan to Tranmere Rovers)

Newcastle raided the academy ranks of fierce rivals Sunderland to sign Jay Turner-Cooke in 2021 on a professional contract. He is now on loan to Tranmere for the second half of the 2022/23 campaign.

Newcastle United forwards

Anthony Gordon

Howe paid Everton £40m with £5m in add-ons to sign Anthony Gordon in 2023. The Toffees product was a talismanic presence at Goodison Park but fell out of favour under former boss Frank Lampard.

Callum Wilson

Bruce took advantage of Bournemouth’s relegation in 2020 to sign Callum Wilson for £20m. He has been the Magpies’ leading goal threat since arriving at St James’ Park and is also an England forward.

Allan Saint-Maximin

Newcastle agreed to an initial £16.5m, rising to £20m, transfer with Nice for Allan Saint-Maximin in 2019. The forward has often been a talismanic presence on the left-hand channel at St James’ since.

Alexander Isak

Howe obliterated Newcastle’s previous transfer record to sign Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad in 2022 for £63m. But his run of injuries disrupted the Sweden international’s start to life at St James’.

Chris Wood (on loan to Nottingham Forest)

Newcastle triggered a £25m release clause in Chris Wood’s contract at Burnley in response to losing Wilson to an injury in 2022. But he will join Nottingham Forest for £15m after an initial loan transfer.

Dylan Stephenson (on loan to Hamilton Academical)

Dylan Stephenson signed his first professional contract with Newcastle in 2021. He is now on loan to Hamilton Academical until May 2023 after a tepid start to his career in the senior squad on Tyneside.

Garang Kuol (on loan to Heart of Midlothian)

Newcastle struck a deal to sign Garang Kuol from Central Coast Mariners in September 2022 before the forward moved to Tyneside in January 2023. Yet he headed out on loan to Hearts to May 2023.
