Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini looks set to start the new season free of injury amid links with a summer transfer to Newcastle United.
Scalvini is a leading Newcastle United transfer target this summer, but is coming off the back of an injury-ravaged campaign.
Indeed, the 21-year-old made only six Serie A appearances during the 2024/25 season. Scalvini suffered a serious knee injury before Euro 2024 and duly missed the tournament, before briefly returning for Atalanta.
His bad luck, however, continued when the defender was forced to undergo shoulder surgery earlier this year.
Luckily for Newcastle, however, he appears to be on the comeback trail. Should they make a move, his fitness hopefully won’t be an issue.

Giorgio Scalvini set to return from injury
The Italy international hasn’t played since January, having suffered a shoulder injury during Atalanta’s game against Barcelona in the Champions League.
However, according to Quotidiano Sportivo, the defender is making good progress in his recovery and is on course to return for Atalanta’s pre-season training schedule, which begins in mid-July.
There has been a managerial change since he last featured, however. The successful Gian Piero Gasperini has left to join Roma, while Atalanta have turned to former Southampton manager Ivan Juric.
How many times Giorgio Scalvini has played with Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali?
Newcastle already have an Italian connection in their squad.
Sandro Tonali, of course, has established himself as one of the club’s very best players since returning from his ten-month ban from football due to betting breaches.
That suspension and Scalvini’s injuries have robbed them of too many chances to play for Italy together, but they have linked up a few times before.

They’ve joined forces for both the Italy senior team and their U21 outfit. As per Transfermarkt data, they’ve made six appearances together, for a total of 398 minutes.
Perhaps next season, they’ll be able to build on that at Newcastle United…
