Newcastle United have been sending their scouts to watch over an exciting talent who was crowned the best young player in Italy last year.

Newcastle look to be preparing for a very busy summer after making just one signing in the January window with the 18-year-old Alfie Harrison.

According to Graeme Bailey at HITC, Newcastle sent scouts to Atalanta’s game against Lazio at the weekend to watch over both Ederson and Giorgio Scalvini.

Newcastle want young star who’s been brilliant in Italy

There’s already been plenty of rumours linking Newcastle with a move for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, but this is the first we’ve heard about any potential interest in defender Scalvini.

Scalvini emerged as an ‘outstanding‘ talent last season when he helped the Serie A club to finish in fifth in the league and earned himself the title of best young player in Italy.

The centre-back made 32 appearances in the top Italian division as he played a key role in their campaign, but he could now be set for a big move to a top European side with Newcastle interested.

Centre-back is an area where Newcastle are known to want to improve in as the future of Jamaal Lascelles looks in doubt and Fabian Schar only recently turned 32-years-old.

Newcastle are not alone in their pursuit of Scalvini

It’s now also been revealed that Manchester United had representatives at the game as well as Newcastle, watching over the Atalanta duo who helped their team to a 3-1 victory over Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Scalvini was understood to be on the right side of a back three, a system that Newcastle are not known to use, though Eddie Howe did show something similar towards the end of the win against Aston Villa.

The Premier League rivals will provide some stiff competition for Newcastle and it may well come down to who finishes higher up in the table with both teams stull fighting for a spot in the Champions League next year.

It’s not yet clear how much they’d demand for the young defender but with that much potential you can guarantee it would be an astronomical fee.
