Newcastle United have signed a striker in the January transfer window.

Sadly, it is not a player who will be having an impact on Newcastle’s first-team squad any time soon.

18-year-old Kyle Fitzgerald will soon join Newcastle to link up with the Magpies under-21s. Elsewhere, Georgian attacker Vakhtang Salia has agreed to join Newcastle in August when he turns 18.

Newcastle have also been working hard on keeping Alexander Isak at the club for the long term. Arsenal want to sign Isak but Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell have slapped a £150m asking price on the Swede.

Isak wants Champions League football and believes Newcastle can give him that this season. The Magpies currently sit fifth in the Premier League which could be enough for a return to Europe’s top competition due to the UEFA Coefficient rules.

The 25-year-old has been an unstoppable force in front of goal so far this season. At one point, he had scored in eight consecutive games, a club record.

Newcastle want to sign another striker in January and while it looks like it may not happen this window there is the possibility that a young attacker could make the move to Tyneside in the summer, despite interest from elsewhere.

RB Leipzig Benjamin Sesko has been on Newcastle’s radar for many years. The Magpies wanted Sesko in summer 2022 but the move never materialised.

He joined Leipzig in 2023 and has performed exceptionally this season. He has 17 goal involvements in all competitions including four goals in the Champions League.

Newcastle wanted Sesko in January alongside Arsenal. However, Leipzig boss Marco Rose ruled out a January exit after he picked up the Player of the Match award in a Champions League game.

According to Charlie Watts in his Daily Briefing, Sesko is more likely to join Arsenal.

Sesko declined the opportunity to leave Leipzig in the summer to continue his development – that has not put Arsenal off.

Watts claims that there is a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ between Sesko and Leipzig that he can leave in the summer for an amount that both Newcastle and Arsenal should be able to afford.

Sesko is keen for game time which may be an issue at Newcastle considering how well Isak has played this season. They are both out-and-out forwards so unless Howe changes the tactics, the chances are they will not play alongside each other.

Alexander Isak’s Newcastle contract situation

While Newcastle are keen to keep a hold of Isak. They need to work on a new deal for the Swede to ensure he stays for many more years.

Isak’s contract talks with Newcastle will resume at the end of the season – some of the possible stipulations have been reported.

Isak wants Callum Wilson’s number nine shirt and a huge pay rise which would see him become Newcastle’s highest earner, an accolade currently held by Bruno Guimaraes.

Given how well Isak has played this season, Howe and Mitchell will be keen to give him what he wants to keep him at the club.
