Paul Mitchell is under pressure as Newcastle United desperately need depth in attack.
It’s turning out to be a fantastic season for Newcastle – a potential Carabao Cup final, and a return to European football are on the cards. Eddie Howe is doing a fantastic job in the circumstances.
Newcastle have done it with the same squad for most of the season with a few replacements here and there for suspension or injury.
The Magpies find themselves fifth in the Premier League table after the midway point of the season thanks to five league wins in a row. Howe wants to bolster his squad in the January transfer window, but it’s understood that only injuries would make Newcastle buy during this transfer window.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |

Profit and Sustainability Rules continue to be a problem for clubs across the league, and Newcastle are no stranger to it. The Magpies sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to avoid a points deduction for the season – their problems have prevented them from buying top targets, but other factors can make deals go sour.
Now, a recent report suggests why a player loved by Newcastle decided to reject a move in the summer.

Newcastle United keeping tabs on Benjamin Sesko
Benjamin Sesko was rated as one of the hottest prospects in Europe before he made the move to RB Leipzig in 2023.
Since signing for the Bundesliga side, Sesko, who Steve McManaman branded as “incredible”, has scored 25 goals in 69 games including nine this season in all competitions.
Newcastle wanted Sesko in the summer with a reported release clause of around £40million. Despite interest across the Premier League, a move never materialised.
According to The Athletic, Sesko was of interest to Newcastle United in the summer and they’re still keeping tabs on him.
Sesko, who has been compared to Erling Haaland by Alan Shearer and hailed as ‘top class’, has made an impact in Europe this season, scoring three goals in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid and Juventus.
Newcastle need a backup for Alexander Isak
Isak has been in red-hot form for Newcastle this season, but it’s tough to find where the goals would come from if he had to miss a game.
The Magpies only have seven different goalscorers in the Premier League this season, joint lowest. There needs to be a backup option Howe can rely on.
| Newcastle’s Top Goalscorers | Goals |
| Alexander Isak | 13 |
| Anthony Gordon | 5 |
| Harvey Barnes | 5 |
William Osula has a big chance to impress against Bromley in the FA Cup on Sunday, he’s been limited to just 158 minutes of football this season – only 28 of that has come from Premier League appearances. That’s not to say he won’t become he player Howe wants him to be though.
Elsewhere, Callum Wilson is still out injured, his contract is up at the end of the season so Newcastle must dip into the transfer market to sign a replacement for him who could easily slot into Howe’s squad if he ever needed to.
