Miguel Almiron has officially played his first game since leaving Newcastle United in January.

The Paraguayan spent six years at Newcastle United but ultimately decided to move back to Atlanta United for a fee of around £8m including add-ons.

Miguel Almiron played a part in Newcastle’s 2023 Carabao Cup final defeat and was a part of their fight to the final this season.

Newcastle fans wished Almiron well following his departure. They all agreed that he gave his all for the club whenever he was on the pitch, even if he did not get as much game time this season.

It is believed that Toon boss Eddie Howe was ‘reluctant’ to sell Almiron who was still a handy squad player whenever he was needed. Newcastle’s lack of squad depth has been evident since his departure – Howe is now playing William Osula on the right wing whenever Jacob Murphy is benched.

Now Almiron has played his first game back in Atlanta. American media has reacted to his performance.

Miguel Almiron impresses in Atlanta United friendly

Almiron marked his return back to the American side with an appearance against New England Revolution on Saturday evening.

The 31-year-old played 69 minutes before being taken off – that was enough to be highly praised for his performance.

In a match report on Atlanta’s official website, it stated that Almiron’s return to the club ‘paid dividends’ on the pitch immediately. Although he did not score, he left his mark on the game without issue.

“Miguel Almirón’s return to the club paid dividends on the pitch immediately,” they said.

“His pace and control on the ball stood out, and even with less time to train with the squad in the preseason, he’s fitting into the Atlanta United attack seamlessly so far.

“Almirón’s positional instincts are well-developed, too, as he was oftentimes tucking inside from the right wing either to receive the ball or progress it.”

Almiron said goodbye to Newcastle fans after the 2-0 win against Southampton in January. He then took to social media to thank the club and the fans for the past six years after moving back to the US.

How Newcastle players reacted to Miguel Almiron exit

Around the club, many were sad to see Almiron leave Newcastle. Newcastle players and staff were emotional during Almiron’s farewell at the club’s training ground.

Callum Wilson and Sven Botman paid tribute to Almiron once his departure was confirmed – they hailed him for his hard work and presence in training.

Even former Newcastle owner Mehrdad Ghoddousi thanked Almiron for his time at the club ahead of the announcement.

The deal was done to help Newcastle’s PSR battle but the club lost a committed member of the squad when Almiron left. Although minutes had been hard to come by this season, he still gave his all for Howe and his teammates.

Kieran Trippier loved playing with Almiron because of his commitment to tracking back whenever Newcastle lost the ball.

It was just a friendly, but Almiron has the chance to be a big success back in Atlanta.
