Newcastle United have officially sold Miguel Almiron to MLS side Atlanta United.

It is a sad day on Tyneside as one of Newcastle United’s longstanding players leaves the club after six years.

Miguel Almiron’s move to Atlanta United was confirmed by Newcastle on Thursday. The Magpies have pocketed around £8m initially, but they could be due around £3m in add-ons.

Newcastle fans were sad to see Almiron leave the club. Many hailed him for his work-rate and thanked him for the memories.

Almiron’s purple patch during the 2022/23 season was certainly the highlight of his time at the club. The 30-year-old also scored the club’s first Champions League goal for 20 years during Newcastle’s historic win against PSG.

It was initially believed that Almiron was not sold on leaving Newcastle. However, the move is now done, and Almiron has a chance to impress upon returning to his old club.

With Almiron’s departure now confirmed, two Newcastle players have sent well-wishes to the Paraguayan.

At Newcastle, Almiron was coached by three separate managers and made 223 appearances in all competitions.

Newcastle’s 3-1 win against Southampton would prove to be his last – Eddie Howe knew that. Howe pushed Almiron in front of the Newcastle fans to give him his moment before he left the club.

Almiron’s departure was confirmed on social media – the club made a ‘thank you’ post for the 30-year-old.

Upon hearing the news, Newcastle players Sven Botman and Callum Wilson put messages on their Instagram stories.

Botman said: “All the best broskii.” Wilson commented: “All the best on your next adventure, Miggy. What a player – what a guy!”

Elsewhere, Jacob Murphy also reacted to the news. He said: “Miggy brooo. What a guy! Thank you for all the great times. We’ll miss you. Legend.”

Almiron’s exit means that Jacob Murphy is the only natural right winger available for Howe. Harvey Barnes is out of action with a muscle strain.

Both Joe Willock and Joelinton can play in that position – Howe would prefer to use them in midfield where they perform at their best.

Other Newcastle United players could follow Almiron out the club

With the January transfer window set to shut on Sunday, Almiron may not be the only Newcastle player to leave the club before the deadline.

Several players could still leave the club. After rejecting approaches from Fenerbahce and Juventus. Borussia Dortmund want Lloyd Kelly on loan. Kelly is reportedly unhappy with his game time and could be set for a move away.

Everton are linked with Sean Longstaff – a move away from Newcastle would hand the club a huge PSR boost as a result to his rise up from the academy. Reports suggest it would cost around £10-12m for Longstaff in January.

Elsewhere, Kieran Trippier is linked with Galatasaray. The 34-year-old is seen as an alternative to Kyle Walker-Peters who is linked with a move to the Turkish side.

With Almiron’s exit now confirmed, Newcastle can focus on tying up loose ends before the transfer window closes.
