Miguel Almiron is set to round off his career in the MLS after completing a move away from Newcastle United this month.

The 30-year-old has been a superb servant to Newcastle United over the past six years following his club record £21m move in 2019.

Newcastle have earned £11m from Almiron re-joining Atlanta United, and the Paraguay international got a good send-off before his move was completed on Thursday.

Almiron waved goodbye to Newcastle fans after the 3-1 win over Southampton. There was also an emotional farewell to Almiron from teammates.

Over his six-year spell on Tyneside, Miguel Almiron has helped Newcastle fight off relegation and also scored an iconic Champions League goal against Paris Saint-Germain. He has played with several players throughout the years, but he believes one teammate in particular is bound to become a manager.

Miguel Almiron convinced Newcastle teammate will become a manager

During his time at Newcastle, Almiron grew very close to Argentine defender Federico Fernandez.

In a club interview back in 2020, Almiron hailed Fernandez’s work ethic in training, saying: “Federico Fernández works really hard, and always gets in early.”

When asked which teammate he would phone as a friend on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Almiron was again quick to name Fernandez. “I reckon I would call Fede because I get on very well with him. Federico Fernandez. I’m always with him… on top of that, he’s a bit older too, so he’s got a lot of experience to call upon!”

In the same interview, Almiron revealed that Fernandez was the one teammate who is most likely to become a manager once their playing career is finished.

“Future manager? Fede for sure,” Almiron said. “He’ll be a manager. In the Premier League? I don’t know, wherever… but he will manage.”

Federico Fernandez recently retired

Almiron seems totally convinced that Fernandez will one day become a manager, and that may be just around the corner after he announced his retirement on 21st December 2024.

Fernandez left Newcastle in 2022 following a series of injuries. After departing Tyneside, he spent short stints with Spanish side Elche and Qatari outfit Al-Duhail before returning to boyhood side Estudiantes where he announced his retirement.

During his four years at St James’ Park, Fernandez made 89 appearances for Newcastle and scored twice.

Howe was a big admirer of Fernandez but the veteran defender only played twice under him before leaving the club as a free agent.
