Miguel Almiron has officially left Newcastle United after six years at the club.

After playing his last game for Newcastle United on Saturday, Miguel Almiron has signed for MLS side Atlanta United.

It is a return to the club he joined Newcastle from in 2019. The Paraguayan leaves having made 223 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies, scoring 30 goals and bagging 12 assists.

There was believed to have been emotional scenes at Newcastle when Almiron said his goodbyes to players and staff. Even a former key figure at Newcastle had his say. Former Newcastle owner Merhdad Ghodoussi wished Almiron luck with the move.

Newcastle are set to bag around £8m + £3m in add-ons for Almiron – it could prove to be a big help for the club’s ongoing PSR struggles.

With Almiron’s departure now confirmed, Newcastle fans have taken to social media to react.

Newcastle United fans react to Miguel Almiron exit

Speculation over whether will do anything with the money raised from Almiron’s sale before the January deadline remains to be seen. Almiron’s exit is good news for PSR, however. It looks unlikely that there will be a repeat of the summer transfer window where Newcastle were forced to sell young assets who had bright futures at the club.

Newcastle do need more depth on the right wing now Almiron has left, but the feeling around Tyneside is that the Magpies will not replace him this month.

Upon the announcement that Almiron had returned to Atlanta, Newcastle fans went to X to make their feelings known.

“Miggy deserves to be judged positively. He spanned two eras, he was proud to play for the club, he was often very good and while he drifted to the margins in recent times, he never stopped smiling. There’s a lot to be said for that.” said one fan. While another added: “Thanks for everything, Miggy! you’ll always be a legend here. best of luck in Atlanta!”

This Newcastle fan looked back at the memories made thanks to Almiron. They said: “Some of my best memories of supporting this football club came with him contributing to them, especially the first goal vs PSG. Thank you, Miggy, and all the best!”

Another fan added: “All you can ask for as a fan is for your players to give 100% for the badge and that’s exactly what Miggy did. His hard work led to some really amazing moments which have been part of the most amazing days I’ve had supporting this club. Wish him all the best.”

Another fan added: “Best wishes to Miggy. You are loved by Newcastle supporters and we’ll always have a special place in our hearts for you. Go and smash it at Atlanta United.”

Finally, this fan said: “Brilliant servant to the club. Gave 110% every game with a smile on his face. Good luck Miggy.”

What Eddie Howe said after Miguel Almiron exit

Almiron’s departure means that Newcastle are short of options on the wing, there is hope that Jacob Murphy can carry on his run of good form until the end of the season to help Newcastle qualify for the Champions League again.

Upon the announcement that Almiron had left the club, Howe spoke via Newcastle’s website to wish the 30-year-old well.

“On behalf of the club, I want to thank Miggy for everything he has given us during our time together,” he said.

“He has been the ultimate professional, and he has been a big part of some of our most memorable moments in recent seasons.

“He is a great person and we’ll miss him greatly, but this is the right move at the right time for him and his family and we wish them well.”
