A former Newcastle United player has shared what head coach Eddie Howe is really like in first-team training.

The 47-year-old missed three of the Magpies’ games in April after being diagnosed with pneumonia. Despite his setback, Eddie Howe still congratulated assistant manager Jason Tindall after a 4-1 win against Manchester United.

That just sums up who Howe is as a person. Even in the worst of times, he still cared about Newcastle United.

Howe has returned to his duties at Newcastle, managing the win against Ipswich Town and the recent draw at Brighton. The Toon boss will be in the dugout once again when Newcastle play Chelsea in a huge game in the Champions League race on Sunday. A win would see the Magpies move within touching distance of qualification.

A lot of work is going on behind the scenes to prepare for the final three games of the season, with Howe keeping the intensity high.

With Howe piling on the pressure for the rest of the season, a former Newcastle player has shared what the boss is really like in training.

Jamie Miley on Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe

Young midfielder Jamie Miley was not able to have the same impact at Newcastle as his brother Lewis has, but he still managed to break into the first team for friendly games.

Miley impressed Howe in Newcastle’s pre-season, calling the 21-year-old from Stanley ‘trustworthy’.

Howe’s comments made many believe that Miley would have a place in Newcastle’s first-team squad this season, but he was loaned out to League Two side Newport County instead. Miley’s loan to Newport was a nightmare hampered by injury.

He was recalled from his loan in January and eventually made a permanent move to National League side Hartlepool United.

Speaking in an interview with the Chronicle, Miley revealed what training is like with Howe as a future prospect.

“He’s relentless,” Miley said. “He knows he can get the best out of you so if you’re giving anything less than that, he will be on to you.

“He is really good with the younger lads. People probably don’t see it, but there’s a lot he goes into behind the scenes to try and get the best of you each day in training. You can see that with the young lads to the most experienced ones in the team like Dan Burn.

“Every training session is really intense. If you went up, you knew it was going to be a tough session whatever day it was. It pays off. You have got to train that way to get into the position you are in.”

Howe has been recognised for giving young players the opportunity in the first team. 18-year-old Lewis Miley continues to be a useful squad player for Newcastle, even making starts for the Magpies on occasion.

How Jamie Miley has fared since leaving Newcastle United

As a youngster who looked set for first-team minutes this season, Miley will no doubt feel disappointed that he was not able to make an impact at Newcastle.

Despite that, Miley has shown his quality in the National League since joining. Miley scored on his Hartlepool debut, rescuing a point for his new club late in the game.

The 21-year-old went on to make 16 appearances, helping the Pools finish 10th in the National League.

After a positive start at his new club, Miley will be keen to push on and help Hartlepool return to the Football League in the future.
