Eddie Howe is a professional football manager in charge of Newcastle United.
One of the first things PIF did after finally assuming ownership of Newcastle United in October 2021 was to sack the vastly unpopular and underperforming manager, Steve Bruce.
That left them with a very important decision to make early on in their tenure but they passed the test with flying colours.
Eddie Howe was hired and, though there have been downs as well as ups, he has made Newcastle a force to reckon with in the Premier League and ended the 70-year wait for a trophy by winning the Carabao Cup.

Who is Eddie Howe?
Edward John Frank Howe is a professional football manager who is the lead coach at St. James’ Park.
Despite his relatively young age for the profession, Howe is approaching two full decades in management after taking his first full-time role in 2008 at Bournemouth.
Howe was initially given a caretaker position but was hired as the permanent manager in January 2009 and somehow kept the Cherries in the EFL despite having a 17-point deficit when he took charge.
He then guided them to League One before being poached by Burnley. However, he would last less than two years at Turf Moor due to personal reasons, returning to Bournemouth in October 2012.
Within three years, Bournemouth won promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history. They enjoyed a five-year stay in the top flight, finishing as high as 9th, but were relegated in 2020.
Howe left shortly afterwards after an eight-year tenure. He spent more than a year out of the game before being hired by Newcastle in November 2021.

Was Eddie Howe a footballer?
Yes, Eddie Howe used to play the game professionally, in the position of centre-back.
His career got off to a strong start, too, making over 200 appearances for Bournemouth, but it all went wrong after he became Harry Redknapp’s first signing for Portsmouth in 2002.
Howe suffered a serious knee injury on his debut, ruling him out for the season. When he finally returned at the start of the next campaign, he injured his knee again just nine minutes in.

He didn’t play again until he returned to Bournemouth on loan at the start of the 2004-05 season. With the Cherries in financial disarray, supporters crowdfunded a £21,000 transfer fee themselves to bring Howe back to the club.
Howe managed to play on for another three seasons but more injuries forced him into early retirement, aged just 29 in 2007.
When and where was Eddie Howe born?
Howe was born in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England, on November 29, 1977. As of April 2025, he is 47 years old.
That still makes him very young for a manager and he could still have decades at the top level.
Howe stands at 5’10” tall.
Eddie Howe teams coached
Howe has only coached three teams in his career so far.
- Bournemouth – 2008-2011, 2012-2020

- Newcastle United – 2021-Present
Eddie Howe’s assistant – Jason Tindall
Howe and Jason Tindall have known each other for years, having been teammates at Bournemouth in their playing days, before working together as a coaching duo on-and-off in the years since.
After Tindall was initially let go from his assistant manager role at Dean Court, Howe brought him back and the pair became the youngest managerial partnership in the Football League.
Tindall even briefly registered as a player under Howe as Bournemouth struggled for numbers under a transfer embargo, but the pair soon turned the club’s fortunes around.

Tindall followed Howe to Burnley and then back again as they guided the club to the Premier League.
After Howe left Bournemouth, Tindall was appointed as his replacement but things didn’t go well and he was sacked a few months later.
Tindall joined the coaching staff at Sheffield United while Howe took time out of the game but immediately reunited with him at Newcastle, where they have been ever since.

Eddie Howe England job
Howe is largely regarded as the best English manager currently in the game and has naturally been heavily linked with the national team job as a result.
Gareth Southgate’s departure in 2024 opened the door for Howe to take the job, if he wanted it, but Thomas Tuchel was hired instead.
The German’s contract only runs until 2026, however, so Howe’s name may be thrown back into the ring after the World Cup.
