Miguel Almiron appeared to wave goodbye to Newcastle United fans after the 3-1 win over Southampton.
After the Magpies returned to winning ways at the St Mary’s Stadium, Eddie Howe pushed Almiron to the fans so that he could wave goodbye before completing a January exit.
While the deal is yet to be finalised, Almiron is close to re-joining Atlanta United six years after he left the MLS club to move to Tyneside.
Newcastle are set to receive £11m for Almiron, broken down into a flat £8m fee plus add-ons. PIF plan to save the Almiron money until the summer despite Newcastle keeping an eye out for right winger targets this month.
If Southampton was Miguel Almiron’s final game at Newcastle – and it certainly looks that way – he got a brilliant send-off from the travelling Toon fans as well as from his teammates.

Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton sing Miguel Almiron chant
Almiron was brought on for the final two minutes of the 3-1 win over Southampton but Howe and his Newcastle teammates made sure attention was on him after the full-time whistle.
As Newcastle fans chanted Almiron’s name from the stands, supporters spotted that Brazilian duo Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton joined in.
While it may only be a small gesture, it embodies the team spirit at Newcastle currently and the close bond between players and fans.
Newcastle United willing to take major Miguel Almiron risk
With Almiron headed for the exit door, it seems very unlikely that Newcastle will replace him for the remainder of the season.
Newcastle receive a £73m PSR boost in the summer and it seems PIF are willing to wait until then to invest heavily in Howe’s squad – despite the dire need for a new winger.
Thankfully, Jacob Murphy is in great form on the right, while Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock and Anthony Gordon could all play on that side if needed.

Losing Almiron does dent Howe’s squad depth for the remainder of the season – especially with Newcastle competing in three competitions.
But the risk will pay off if the club can land one of their top targets in the summer.
