Eddie Howe amazed by one thing he’s seen from Jacob Murphy at Newcastle United, it’s ‘second to none’

A number of Newcastle United players have had to step up this season.

Indeed, with Eddie Howe unable to strengthen his squad to any significant degree over the course of the summer transfer window, Newcastle needed to look for internal solutions.

They tried and failed to sign Anthony Elanga over the course of the summer, limiting their options at right wing.

The situation has been so pressing at times that the likes of Anthony Gordon and Joelinton have deployed in that position, such is the lack of trust Eddie Howe seems to have had in Miguel Almiron.

Still, Jacob Murphy has stepped up of late.

The winger may not be the most fashionable name in the squad but has contributed six assists and three goals this season.

In fact, three of those assists have come in recent four-game winning streak in the Premier League.

Speaking before Saturday’s trip to Tottenham, Howe was keen to stress just how good a crosser Murphy really is.

“Jacob has done really well, goals and assists is what every attacking player needs in their games, he has had a strong group of games,” he said during Friday’s pre-match press conference.

“His crossing ability is second to none. We are pleased for him.”

Newcastle teammates seem to love Jacob Murphy

At some point, Newcastle may need to go out and sign a new right winger. That does not, however, mean Murphy should be completely disregarded. He can still have an important future.

The likes of Alexander Isak have been full of praise for the former Norwich winger, hailing his selfless attitude. Gordon, meanwhile, was hugely impressed with Murphy’s performances during pre-season.

Clearly a valuable member of the squad, there would be little need to move Murphy on even if a new signing does come into the club either this month or during the summer.

Newcastle need players like Murphy going forward.
