Newcastle United close in on £73m PSR boost that will solve Eddie Howe’s transfer issues

Newcastle United’s issues with PSR could soon be a thing of the past.

The Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules have been a constant hindrance to Newcastle United since the PIF takeover was completed in 2021.

Eddie Howe was forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh before the PSR deadline last summer. It was one of his toughest decisions as manager but Newcastle United were at risk of facing a points deduction if they didn’t raise money through sales.

Despite making a net profit in the summer window, Newcastle once again find themselves having to limit their spending to avoid a breach.

Reports suggest Newcastle have to sell to buy in January. Newcastle want to sign a new right winger, but the budget simply isn’t there for Eddie Howe or sporting director Paul Mitchell to go out and land the club’s top targets.

Newcastle United set for £73m PSR boost in summer

The PSR regulations state that no top-flight club can lose more than £105million over a three-year rolling period.

Because of the heavy investment following the takeover, Newcastle recorded combined losses of £121m for the 2021/22 and 2022/23 years. That massively put the club on the back foot and explains why a profit was needed in the summer.

However, because of the three-year rolling period, Newcastle’s losses from three years ago – the 2021/22 campaign – are set to drop out of the equation.

As reported by The Chronicle, Newcastle are expected to post a small profit for 2023/24 as a result of the increased sponsorship revenue and participation in European football.

The £73m loss from 2021/22 will drop out of the cycle, which will grant Newcastle huge financial flexibility in the summer. The PSR deadline is June 30th, meaning Newcastle should have plenty of money to spend in July and beyond.

Are Newcastle at risk of breaching PSR this week?

Premier League clubs will learn this week whether or not they have breached PSR and whether they are facing any punishment.

The Premier League have already handed out points deductions to Everton and Nottingham Forest last season for breaching PSR, and Newcastle cut it very close in the summer before the Anderson and Minteh deals were completed.

However, the Chronicle report above claims Newcastle are confident they have complied with the regulations and are therefore not expecting any punishment from the Premier League this week.

Reports claim Mitchell has £70m to spend in January, but any money spent this month will likely require Newcastle to sell and balance the books before June 30th.
