Atlanta’s brilliant gesture to Newcastle United as Miguel Almiron deal nears completion

Newcastle United are preparing for Miguel Almiron’s move to Atlanta United.

Almiron is set to leave the club in the coming days to return to his former side in the MLS. Newcastle are set to bag around £10m from Almiron’s departure – a massive help for the Magpies’ ongoing PSR worries.

Almiron has been touted for an exit on many occasions in the last 12 months. In January 2024, Almiron nearly joined Al-Shabab before opting to stay on Tyneside.

The Paraguayan also rejected approaches from MLS side Charlotte FC in the summer. Now, the 30-year-old looks to have finally gotten his move after falling down the pecking order at Newcastle.

Recent reports suggest that Almiron has already played his Newcastle game. He started Newcastle’s FA Cup win over Bromley – not many would have thought it was the last time they would see the winger.

Almiron was named in Eddie Howe’s matchday squad for the defeat against Bournemouth on Saturday but was an unused substitute.

Now, with the deal almost complete, recent words have revealed what Atlanta are allowing Newcastle to do before Almiron moves back to the USA.

Atlanta will wait to sign Almiron from Newcastle

The 2025 MLS season does not start until February 22. If Almiron were to join Atlanta this week, he would not play a competitive fixture for nearly a month. The Magpies are at the tail end of the busiest period of the season and need as many bodies as possible.

When asked about Almiron on the NUFC Matters transfer show, Ben Jacobs said that Atlanta are prepared to wait until the end of the transfer window to sign Almiron as Newcastle needs as many bodies as possible before the January window closes.

“I would imagine from talking to sources that Atlanta might be quite flexible,” he said.

“You might see a situation where it appears to go quiet, but it’s actually just a case of Newcastle getting as much out of Almiron as they possibly can.

“Atlanta are prepared to give that their blessing. There is always the danger of injury. But the feeling is that Almiron is more of a squad player at the moment coming off the bench rather than starting games.

“As long as they know that they can get the player (Atlanta) are prepared to wait right until the close of the window. That might allow Newcastle a few more games with a bit more Almiron depth.

“Then from there I would expect him to be given permission to travel as there is an agreement in principle between Newcastle and Atlanta and I understand that Almiron has agreed personal terms.”

Before the Bournemouth game, Newcastle fan group Wor Flags displayed a banner for Almiron as a tribute to the winger before his exit.

Almiron was a good servant to Newcastle

Although his performances have not been fantastic in the last 18 months, Almiron can be praised for the job he has done when it mattered.

Fans will surely never forget his purple patch during the 2022/23 season which helped Newcastle qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

Almiron has been involved in some of the most important games in the club’s history. The 30-year-old played in the Carabao Cup final in 2023 and scored the opener in Newcastle’s historic win against PSG at St James’ Park.

Whatever follows for Almiron, he will be remembered at Newcastle for his efforts.
