£73m PSR boost is one of three reasons Newcastle United should be positive despite quiet January

The winter transfer window has slammed shut without Newcastle United making any major signings.

For the third window in a row, Newcastle United fans have been frustrated by a lack of transfer business.

Eddie Howe warned January would be quiet, and unfortunately the Newcastle boss has only seen his first-team squad be weakened over the past month.

Miguel Almiron left to rejoin Atlanta United for £11m, while Lloyd Kelly completed a loan move to Juventus with an obligatory £20m buy clause in the summer.

The lack of transfer business over the summer ended up having an impact on Newcastle’s start to the season, but there are three reasons why Toon fans should be positive despite the quiet window.

Newcastle United have solved all PSR concerns

Fans will understandably be sick of hearing the term PSR thrown around over the past few months, but the club’s financial concerns are no more.

The Profit and Sustainability Rules work on a rolling three-year period meaning Newcastle will bank a £73m PSR boost this summer when the losses from 2021/22 drop out of the equation.

Because of the sales of Almiron and Kelly, Newcastle’s summer budget has grown an extra £100m, which puts Newcastle in position to spend big.

Paul Mitchell’s priority targets are a new star striker, right winger and centre-back.

Newcastle United’s top targets are still available

While Newcastle did miss out on Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis this month, two of the club’s top targets will be available in the summer.

Tottenham’s £70m Marc Guehi bid was rejected on deadline day, meaning the Crystal Palace star – who is a long-term target for Newcastle – is still up for grabs in the summer.

Kelly’s sale allows Newcastle to sign a £70m star so Mitchell will have more than enough in the budget to go and land Guehi after missing out on him last summer.

Newcastle target Angel Gomes snubbed a deadline day move meaning he will become a free agent in the summer when his deal expires. Newcastle can re-enter the race to sign the England star.

Newcastle United’s mega stars stayed put

There have been no improvements to Howe’s starting XI at Newcastle, but the Magpies did make sure that their key players stayed put on Tyneside.

Arsenal’s links to Alexander Isak became insufferable, but the Swedish star is going nowhere. Isak will be offered a new contract at the end of the season, which will hopefully put all transfer rumours to bed.

Manchester City’s interest in Bruno Guimaraes also fizzled out, while Antony Gordon and Sven Botman are two other stars Newcastle will want to keep hold of.
