One of Newcastle United’s top transfer targets has decided to stay put this month and wait for a summer move.
It is looking more and more likely that Newcastle United will end the January transfer window with no new additions to the first-team squad.
Eddie Howe has warned Newcastle about going stale if they fail to recruit new signings, but the Magpies boss will have to make do with his current squad.
If anything, Howe’s squad has been weakened this month with Miguel Almiron moving to MLS and Lloyd Kelly joining Juventus for £20m.
It has been a frustrating month for Newcastle fans from a recruitment perspective, but one of the club’s top signings has left the door open for a 2025 deal.

Angel Gomes will be a free agent in 2025
Angel Gomes has been a long-term target for Newcastle, with the Magpies showing interest at the end of the summer.
The 24-year-old has had a superb year at Lille as well as breaking into the England squad. Gomes, who has been described as ‘skillful’ will be out of contract in the summer, meaning he will be a free agent.
Gomes has also attracted interest from Tottenham, who weighed up a potential bid this month to get an early deal over the line.
However, The Telegraph report that Angel Gomes is set to stay at Lille this summer before making a decision over his future in the summer.
A deadline-day move has been ruled out, meaning Newcastle are still firmly in the race for his signature.
Newcastle are preparing for a big summer window
While January has been frustrating for Newcastle, the money saved – and raised through sales – will contribute to a huge summer budget.
The Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules have shackled Newcastle’s spending of late, but the regulations work on a three-year rolling period meaning the losses from 2021/22 will drop out of the equation in the summer.
That alone will give Newcastle plenty of spending power and the £30m-plus fees collected for Almiron and Kelly will add to the cash pool.

After years of failing to improve the starting XI, Newcastle can head into the summer planning to improve almost every area of the pitch.
A move for Gomes is still on the cards in the summer, although there will no doubt be other Premier League clubs competing for his signature.
