Newcastle United transfer hopes still alive after Tottenham’s deadline day bid is rejected

Newcastle United’s patient approach to the transfer window has caused them to miss out on top targets already.

It seems increasingly likely that Eddie Howe will have to go another transfer window without any improvements to his first-team squad.

If anything, Newcastle United’s squad has been weakened over the past month with Miguel Almiron rejoining Atlanta United and Lloyd Kelly closing in on a £20m Juventus move.

Ironically, Newcastle have sold two players who play in positions where they needed to strengthen – right wing and centre-back.

Newcastle wanted to sign a right winger this month but it seems that itch will be scratched in the summer. Newcastle do not plan on replacing Kelly on deadline day either, meaning Howe will have to make do with his current squad.

Tottenham’s £70m Marc Guehi bid is rejected

One of Newcastle’s top targets in the summer was Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell walked away from the Guehi deal after multiple bids were rejected, but the England international has remained on the club’s radar.

However, Guehi is also attracting interest from other Premier League clubs and Tottenham went as far as submitting a bid for the 24-year-old on deadline day.

As revealed by Fabrizio Romano, Palace rejected Tottenham’s bid in the last 48 hours. He adds that Guehi’s situation will now continue into the summer window with his contract due to expire in 2026.

Journalist Ed Aarons has added that Tottenham’s bid for Guehi was worth £70m – more than Newcastle’s bids were worth in the summer.

Newcastle United’s Marc Guehi hopes are still alive

Newcastle continued to monitor Guehi this month and were even ready to match any potential bids. Clearly Tottenham’s £70m offer was unmatchable.

But Palace rejecting Tottenham’s offer suggests Guehi is not up for sale on deadline day. Speculation around his future will run into the summer window, which is great news for Newcastle.

Newcastle are set for a PSR boost this summer which will hugely increase the budget available to Mitchell.

A top-class centre-back is towards the top of Newcastle’s shopping list, especially with Kelly joining Juventus this month.

There will likely be competition from other Premier League sides, but if Newcastle can secure a return to the Champions League then they have as good of a chance as any top-flight club to get a deal over the line.
