£100m transfer boost for Newcastle United as Paul Mitchell targets three signings

Newcastle United’s quiet January transfer window is set to have a major impact on the summer budget.

For the third window in a row, Eddie Howe is set to go without any upgrades to his starting XI at Newcastle United.

Much of the blame lies with the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules, with Newcastle wary of a potential points deduction if they breach the regulations on the 30th June deadline.

But the truth is that Newcastle did have money to spend this month, but the club’s top targets were not necessarily available.

It put the Magpies in a difficult position – to spend now on second-choice targets or to wait for the summer when there will be a bigger budget and potentially European football as an extra attraction. The club went with the second option.

Newcastle United add extra £100m to summer budget

While Newcastle have not added any major signings this month, the Magpies have raised around £30m through the sales of Miguel Almiron.

Almiron rejoined Atlanta United for £11m and Lloyd Kelly is set to join Juventus on loan with an obligation to buy for £20m. By the time the summer rolls around, that will have a huge impact on PSR and the transfer budget available to Paul Mitchell.

According to iNews, Newcastle’s late flurry of sales has added an extra £100m to the summer budget.

Newcastle are already set for a £73m PSR boost in the summer when the losses from the 2021/22 season drop out of the equation.

It sets the Magpies up for a potentially huge spending spree in the summer when top targets are available and more likely to leave.

Paul Mitchell targets three major signings in summer

Newcastle wanted to sign a right winger this month, but Mitchell does not want a deadline day signing as he would prefer to save funds for the summer.

It is a risk to wait, but Newcastle are suffering short-term pain for long-term gain.

Work has already begun on Newcastle’s summer targets, with the report from above claiming that Mitchell wants three signings to kickstart a major overhaul.

Newcastle will reportedly prioritise a new centre-back, right-winger and striker in the summer. The club’s top targets were not attainable in January.

PSV star Johan Bakayoko, Southampton’s Tyler Dibling and Bournemouth‘s Ilya Zabarnyi are all named as top targets for the summer. It should be a much more exciting window than over the past month.
