Yoane Wissa is closing in on sealing his desired move to Newcastle United but that’s not his only dream that is set to come true on transfer deadline day.
It’s already been a hectic transfer deadline day for Newcastle United as the two biggest transfers of the day edge closer to completion.
Newcastle have accepted a £125m offer from Liverpool for Alexander Isak, with their demands of £150m finally caving at the final hurdle.
Isak is in Liverpool completing his medical for what will be a British transfer record.
Thankfully, Newcastle have finally found a breakthrough in finding their replacement and are closing in on signing Yoane Wissa.
The Magpies have had to pay a premium price to get the striker, though, with a £55m package agreed with Brentford for Wissa.
Newcastle settled on Wissa when it became clear Wolves would not be selling Jorgen Strand Larsen after only signing him permanently themselves this summer.
Wissa has been desperate to get the transfer to St. James’ Park and, after finally getting his way, he looks to be getting his dream shirt number, too.
- Who is Yoane Wissa? Newcastle United’s £55m Alexander Isak replacement

Yoane Wissa’s Newcastle United squad number revealed
In a similar scenario to Isak, Wissa refused to play for Brentford in pre-season and at the start of the Premier League campaign as he worked to force through a move.
Wissa even released a bombshell statement on the weekend, in which he talked about his desire to leave and the promises that were made to him.
After it looked like Brentford would hold firm, they’ve relented in the face of a massive bid for a 28-year-old striker who’s in the final year of his contract.
Wissa wanted the move and it’s now been revealed that he will wear the coveted No.9 shirt at Newcastle, as reported by Craig Hope.
Eyebrows were raised when record signing Nick Woltemade opted for No.27 rather than claim the available No.9, free after Callum Wilson’s departure.
However, it was clearly being saved for another striker, one who was eager to wear the shirt.
Keith Downie reported earlier in August that Wissa had his ‘eyes set’ on the famous jersey, which was made famous in Newcastle by legends like Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand.
Squad numbers available for new Newcastle signings on transfer deadline day
Newcastle’s spending this summer will reach £260m once Wissa is confirmed, by far the most PIF have spent in a single window since buying the club.
Yet, Newcastle are still looking to conduct more business before the window shuts at 7pm on Monday.
Wissa’s arrival will make it six first-team signings, which means a lot of the available squad numbers have been claimed.
There are still some options available, though, including a No.14, which will soon become free when Isak seals his move:
- 13 – Last worn by Matt Targett, on loan at Middlesbrough
- 14 – Set to be vacated by Alexander Isak
- 15 – Last worn by Harvey Barnes in 2024
- 16 – Last worn by Jeff Hendrick in 2022
- 19 – Last worn by Odysseas Vlachodimos, on loan at Sevilla
- 22 – Last worn by Nick Pope in 2025
- 24 – Last worn by Miguel Almiron in 2025
- 25 – Last worn by Lloyd Kelly in 2024
There are several appealing shirts up for grabs, but it remains to be seen if Newcastle will make any other deadline day additions.
Davide Frattesi has been the only other solid link, even if those reports were rubbished by Inter.
Another midfielder could come in handy for Newcastle, especially amid injuries ahead of a gruelling Champions League campaign.
