Newcastle United will have to go toe-to-toe with Tottenham in the summer transfer window.

The January transfer window was a relatively quiet one for Newcastle United. For a third consecutive window, Eddie Howe had to go without any direct improvements to his starting XI.

Instead, Newcastle chiefs including sporting director Paul Mitchell were focused on raising money through sales.

Miguel Almiron returned to Atlanta United and Lloyd Kelly completed a move to Juventus. The duo are set to bring in over £30m in transfer fees once Kelly’s loan becomes permanent in the summer.

Newcastle are expected to spend big in the summer after overcoming their PSR concerns. There are three positions Newcastle want to improve in particular, and the club already have targets in mind.

Tottenham target Adam Wharton and Tyler Dibling

Newcastle’s priority over the winter was signing a right winger – especially as Almiron has now departed for the MLS.

The Magpies failed to make a marquee winger signing in the summer, too, despite a £50m deadline day bid for Anthony Elanga.

Newcastle considered a move for Tyler Dibling in January, but Southampton were not keen to let a star player leave amid their relegation fight.

The Saints winger has also attracted interest from Spurs, but Newcastle are determined to beat Tottenham to Dibling after sharing a long-term interest in the 18-year-old.

According to TeamTalk, Tottenham are also showing an interest in Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton – another player on Newcastle’s radar.

Newcastle have scouted Wharton since 2023, when he was starring at Blackburn Rovers. Since then, he has impressed in the Premier League and earned a call-up to the England first-team squad.

Wharton’s contract at Palace is valid until 2029 so signing him may be difficult this summer, especially as Newcastle have also maintained their interest in Marc Guehi.

Champions League will help Newcastle United land top targets

Alongside Wharton and Tyler Dibling, Tottenham want to beat Newcastle to Angel Gomes, who will become a free agent in the summer.

Eddie Howe and Mitchell will have some persuading to do in the summer to pip Spurs to all three targets – but one thing will favour the Magpies.

Newcastle are currently sixth in the Premier League table and are chasing a return to the Champions League. Even if that isn’t possible, a return to Europe looks likely.

In contrast, Spurs find themselves down in 14th, meaning they will likely have no European football to offer to new signings in the summer.

Plus, with PSR concerns hopefully a thing of the past, Newcastle will not get financially outmuscled by the London outfit. Game on.
