Newcastle United have suffered a fresh blow to their transfer plans with one target preferring a move to Tottenham.

The Magpies are yet to complete a signing this month with the club wary of breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Before the window was even open, Eddie Howe warned January could be quiet with Newcastle prepared to not do any business this month in order to boost the summer budget.

Newcastle have kept one eye on the market and signing a right winger is a top priority, especially with Miguel Almiron set to leave for MLS. With just under a week left, new arrivals cannot be ruled out, but it seems Newcastle’s main focus is on the summer.

A midfielder could be targeted in the summer with Manchester City’s James McAtee admired by Newcastle. Another player on the club’s radar is Lille’s Angel Gomes.

Angel Gomes prefers Tottenham move over Newcastle

Howe has previously admitted that central midfield is Newcastle’s strongest position, but with Sean Longstaff’s future up in the air, it is an area that could be reinforced in the summer.

Newcastle’s interest in Angel Gomes dates back to September, with the 24-year-old in the final year of his contract at Lille. He is set to become a free agent in the summer.

Despite interest from the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund, reports suggest Newcastle will try to sign Gomes in 2025.

However, GiveMeSport claims that Gomes “wants to join” Tottenham rather than Newcastle or any other interested club.

Gomes would have demanded huge wages at Newcastle anyway, so a deal would have harmed the club’s already worrying PSR position.

Paul Mitchell setting Newcastle up for a big summer

New sporting director Paul Mitchell did not make the best first impression at St James’ Park after an underwhelming end to the summer transfer window was followed by a public fall-out with Howe.

However, with Almiron on his way out of the club and the likes of Lloyd Kelly, Longstaff and Wilson also up for sale, Newcastle are finally starting to solve their PSR issues.

Additionally, Newcastle will receive a £73m PSR boost in the summer as their losses from the 2021/22 season drop out of the three-year equation.

It means that Newcastle should have a relatively big summer budget to invest in Howe’s squad.

Howe is expected to qualify for Europe this season and as things stand Newcastle are on track to return to the Champions League. A return to continental football will only make it easier for the club to attract world-class players.
