Newcastle United fans should hopefully see exactly what Paul Mitchell is about in 2025, as he plans a major overhaul at St James’ Park.
The Newcastle United sporting director has had a tough few months on Tyneside. Paul Mitchell has been unable to make a major signing since arriving, while his early issues with Eddie Howe are well documented.
There have been attempts to do business in January. Newcastle nearly signed Abdukodir Khusanov, but PSR issues have remained.
That situation has improved due to Miguel Almiron joining Atlanta United, but the PSR headroom that Newcastle have gained will not be utilised in January.
Newcastle United’s summer 2025 plan after Miguel Almiron is sold

Instead, it looks like the Magpies are going to hold off on any major transfers right now in preparation for a squad reset in the summer.
That is according to the i Paper, who report that Newcastle United will be able to ‘rebuild their squad’ when the summer transfer window opens following the sale of Almiron.
The i Paper add that three signings are already considered a priority, with Paul Mitchell set to bring in a right winger, a centre-back and a forward.
Who Newcastle United could target for those positions
The three positions that Newcastle plan to strengthen in are the three positions they needed to strengthen in during the summer of 2024. However, they were unable to.
There are various options at right wing for the Magpies. Newcastle are interested in Tyler Dibling from Southampton, while rumours surrounding Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo will persist. Elsewhere, Johan Bakayoko could be a target for Newcastle.
However, it is unclear who the Magpies could target for the other two positions. Marc Guehi will certainly be available, as he will be entering the final year of his Crystal Palace contract. It is well documented that Eddie Howe is a big fan of the England international.
Up front, Newcastle have been linked with Jonathan David, who is set to become a free agent when his Lille contract expires. He would be an exceptional addition. However, it feels unlikely that Newcastle will sign a player of his calibre as long as Alexander Isak is at the club.
Alternatively, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a good option for Newcastle, as they weigh up how to replace Callum Wilson, who looks set to depart. However, Ben Jacobs has suggested that Newcastle will not sign Calvert-Lewin this summer.
