Newcastle United are now focussing on arrivals in the summer transfer window.
As a lacklustre January transfer window comes to a close. Newcastle United fans will not be looking back at it with many fond memories.
There have been no signings made for Newcastle’s first-team squad, and only one permanent exit.
Miguel Almiron left Newcastle to return to Atlanta United in the MLS for around £11m including add-ons. The move was believed to have been motivated by PSR which the club have struggled with for the last 12 months.
Almiron’s exit leaves Newcastle without many options in his position – Harvey Barnes’ injury setback has not helped either.
The summer transfer window looks more promising for Newcastle. PSR should not be as much of a problem thanks to the losses from the 2021/22 season being removed from the three-year FFP cycle.
Newcastle can now approach players from abroad over pre-contract agreements – something they have already started doing. Newcastle are in talks with Malaga winger Antonio Cordero over a possible move in the summer.
The Magpies are linked to another star who plays overseas, but a recent report now suggests they could lose out on him to West Ham.

West Ham offer contract to Angel Gomes
LOSC Lille midfielder Angel Gomes‘ contract with the Ligue 1 side runs out at the end of the season – early signs suggest that he will leave the French club in the summer.
Now an England international, Gomes got his start at Manchester United before joining Lille on a free transfer in 2020. Since joining, Gomes has made 132 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals and bagging 19 assists.
Newcastle are keeping tabs on Gomes but according to Caught Offside, Tottenham have already held talks with the 24-year-old, but West Ham have gone as far to offer him a contract.
The report claims that Bayern Munich think very highly of Gomes and states that as well as Newcastle, RB Leipzig and Aston Villa are keen on getting his signature.
Gomes favours a move to Tottenham over any other club. Recent reports also suggest that Gomes has high wage demands which could prove to be a problem for Newcastle.
The 24-year-old played in four of Lille’s Champions League games this season, most recently in their 6-1 win against Feyenoord on Wednesday.

Newcastle do not need another midfielder
There is no doubt that Gomes would be a sensational catch for any club that wants to sign him. However, he may struggle for minutes at Newcastle if Eddie Howe were to sign him.
The Magpies midfield trio of Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have been exceptional this season. Their form has kept the likes of Sean Longstaff out of the starting XI.
Howe has stated that the midfield is Newcastle’s strongest position given how much depth he has available to him. Newcastle even have young Lewis Miley as a potential option in midfield.
If Newcastle are to sign a player on big wages or spend a large chunk of their transfer fee, Howe and sporting director Paul Mitchell will be keen to make sure it is on a player who will consistently play first-team football.
The Magpies need a right winger following Almiron’s sale, Newcastle must focus on that before looking at other positions.
