Eddie Howe has not strengthened his Newcastle United squad during the January transfer window.
In fact, his squad could be about to get weaker. Miguel Almiron is going to join Atlanta United, as the Paraguayan heads back to the MLS in a £10million deal.
However, that transfer is unlikely to lead to Newcastle United bringing in reinforcements. Even with that £10million in the bank, PSR will continue to limit the Magpies’ ability to sign players.
While there is still time left in the window, Newcastle United are facing up to the reality of a third consecutive transfer without signing a single player who improves Eddie Howe’s starting XI. That is tough for the Toon boss, who continues to exceed expectations despite fears that his squad could go stale.
The Magpies could always gamble and bring someone in now. However, that would mean selling someone else between now and the end of June. It could create a similar situation to the one that Newcastle endured in 2024, which was an absolute nightmare.
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United recruitment stance

Newcastle United are simply not going to take that gamble, with Paul Mitchell minded to look at the bigger picture and take a long-term approach with the Magpies’ transfer strategy.
While that is Mitchell’s view, how does Eddie Howe feel? After all, he is the one who is judged by performances on the pitch, and his job has been much harder without the ability to freshen up his squad.
According to the i Paper, Eddie Howe believes that the club’s recruitment stance is correct and is in agreement with it.
Interestingly, a similar message has come from the Telegraph on Thursday as well. They report that Howe understands the financial situation that the club is in, despite wanting to strengthen in January.
With a similar message coming from multiple publications, it really feels like the club are eager to cool any expectations that fans might have. Unless there is some kind of miracle and a perfect deal presents itself, there is probably not going to be any incoming transfer business during the January window.
Newcastle must give Eddie Howe leeway due to transfer problems
Howe is appreciative of the situation. He clearly knows how delicate it is, while he has openly spoke about how devastated he was that Newcastle lost Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh during the summer. He will not want another situation like that.
While Howe understands and accepts the club’s recruitment stance, Toon officials must also accept that it is a huge factor if things start to go wrong on the pitch. The finger cannot immediately be pointed at Howe, who has largely worked with the same group of players for the past two years.
Hopefully that changes in the summer, when Newcastle United are in a better position to invest. The Magpies are looking at the bigger picture, and will have everything crossed that their inability to gamble does not result in the club missing out on Champions League qualification.
