Newcastle United are aiming to get back into the Champions League.

Eddie Howe‘s side competed in last season’s Champions League, and created memories for Newcastle United fans that will last a lifetime. Newcastle’s 4-1 win over PSG was incredible, while Howe’s side were very close to actually making it out of the group of death.

Now Newcastle have had a taste of Europe’s elite competition, they want more. Newcastle’s goal is to eventually get back into the Champions League, but to do that you need Champions League calibre players.

The Magpies have got that with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, but it is obvious that Eddie Howe needs more.

That will be up to Paul Mitchell to address, as he is the man in charge of Newcastle United’s recruitment as sporting director.

Newcastle United target Angel Gomes

Following a disastrous summer transfer window, a new target is on the Magpies’ radar.

According to the Sun, Newcastle United are interested in signing Lille midfielder Angel Gomes.

The report states that Newcastle could even make a January bid for Gomes, who could be available for a bargain fee due to being in the final year of his contract.

The Sun also state that the 24-year-old is a target for Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

What Angel Gomes has said about the Champions League amid Newcastle interest

If Newcastle United want Champions League quality players then they can look no further than Gomes.

That is according to the man himself, who spoke about his ability to play in Europe’s top competition during an interview with La Voix Du Nord back in May.

“It has been a very positive season for me,” he said.

“I have improved many parts of my game. I think I have the quality to play in the Champions League.”

Gomes is now preparing to do exactly that, with Lille competing in this season’s Champions League after coming fourth in Ligue 1.

Gomes impresses for England

Links with a move to Newcastle United come after Gomes recently made his England debut.

The former Manchester United man won two caps during the international break, with Lee Carsley giving him his big chance.

Gomes made a substitute appearance against Ireland, then played the full 90 minutes of the win over Finland.

He started in the middle of the park alongside Declan Rice, and really looked at home in an England shirt. Gomes was incredibly assured in possession, showcasing his passing range and helping ensure the Three Lions ticked over. He was also very good off the ball, covering space well and highlighting his ability to read the game.

Despite only being 5ft6in, he was still able to impose himself in central midfield due to his intelligence.

Gomes knows plenty of players at Newcastle United

Those qualities would make him a welcome addition at Newcastle United, where he already knows various members of Eddie Howe’s squad.

Since he has been in the most recent England squad, Gomes has trained alongside Newcastle regulars Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento and Nick Pope.

Elsewhere, he is also very familiar with Sven Botman. The pair played together at Lille for one season, before Botman completed his £35million transfer to Newcastle United.

Now the pair could be reunited at St James’ Park, as the Magpies ponder a January move for Gomes.
