Newcastle United have shifted the focus on recruitment since Paul Mitchell joined.
The sporting director has made Newcastle United completely change their mentality over how they will recruit in future transfer windows.
It has been a quiet window on Tyneside. The biggest news so far has been Miguel Almiron’s move away from Newcastle which was confirmed on Thursday.
Newcastle fans wished Almiron well as he returned to Atlanta United, his former club. Now, Paul Mitchell wants Newcastle to sign young players from abroad in a bid to find hidden gems at a considerably lower price.
From an arrivals perspective, things have been almost non-existent – only Kyle Fitzgerald’s arrival at Newcastle can be cited back to when asked about who the club signed in January.
While business in January may be slim, the Magpies have their eye on one star who has impressed this season but faces tough competition for his signature.
Stefanos Tzimas favours Brighton over Newcastle United
Greek attacker Stefanos Tzimas has taken the 2. Bundesliga by storm during his loan spell at FC Nurnberg. The 19-year-old has scored 10 league goals so far this season, only four players have more.
Though he does play for Greek side PAOK FC, Nurnberg are planning to sign Tzimas and immediately sell him on for profit.
Newcastle are interested in Tzimas, but he does not have a shortage of admirers. Chelsea and Brighton like Tzimas and now it looks like the striker will favour a move to the Seagulls in the summer.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Tzimas held talks with Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler which have been considered as ‘very good’. As a result, Tzimas is open to the Brighton move.
Plettenberg also states that both Tottenham and Aston Villa are engaged in concrete talks, but Brighton are in pole position.
It will cost around £21m to sign Tzimas in the summer after Nurnberg activates their obligation.
Newcastle look more likely to spend in the summer
While it has been a disappointing transfer window for Newcastle fans to endure, there is hope that the summer transfer window will be much more positive.
The Magpies missed out on several names that moved to other Premier League clubs. However, Newcastle will receive a £73m PSR boost which will make them more likely to spend.
The club’s heavy losses from the 2021/22 season will be chalked off which gives Eddie Howe and Mitchell a big opportunity to spend more freely on players they admire.
Mitchell will now focus on getting transfer targets together for the summer window. PSR will not be as much of a problem then.
