Paul Mitchell has a new transfer strategy at Newcastle United, it’s down to him to deliver.

The January transfer window has already proved to be an interesting one on Tyneside – the potential outgoings that looked nailed on to leave could now be part of Newcastle’s first-team squad until at least the end of the season.

Martin Dubravka looked set to leave Newcastle for the Saudi Pro League. The Slovakian even had an emotional moment with Toon fans at full-time on Tuesday following Newcastle’s win at Arsenal. However, on Thursday, reports suggested Newcastle are trying to keep Dubravka at the club.

The Magpies could also lose Miguel Almiron in January – the Paraguayan is unhappy with his game time this season after being frozen out of the starting XI in favour of Jacob Murphy.

Amidst the talk of exits, Newcastle are still eying arrivals in January with Toon boss Eddie Howe eager to keep up his efforts to play European football this season. Newcastle want to improve three positions and Mitchell wants Newcastle to recruit outside of England.

The Magpies were linked with one name in December but recent words suggest they’re not alone in their pursuit.

Brighton monitor Newcastle-linked Stefanos Tzimas

Tzimas has been labelled as one of Greece’s most talented prospects in recent years, at just 19 he has made a fantastic impression during his loan spell at 2. Bundesliga side FC Nurnberg from PAOK FC.

Newcastle like Tzimas and hope to make a move for him in the summer, but recent reports from Florian Plettenberg state that Brighton are eyeing a move for the Greek striker.

He claims that like Newcastle, the Seagulls are eyeing a move for the 19-year-old in the summer. Chelsea and Aston Villa are also reportedly interested in the striker.

Tzimas has scored eight goals in 14 games so far this season, Nurnberg plan on making his loan deal permanent with the intention to immediately sell him for profit in the summer. At the moment, Tzimas would cost Nurnberg £14.9m.

Newcastle have already signed a striker in January

Tzimas’ signing would be a mere continuation on Mitchell’s youth recruitment drive. The Magpies have made a name for themselves in the youth market in the last year.

Alfie Harrison joined Newcastle from Manchester City for £3.5m in January 2024. They also signed young midfielder Rory Finneran from Blackburn in the summer window.

Newcastle have already done some rather quiet business this transfer window – the Magpies are set to announce the signing of 17-year-old striker Kyle Fitzgerald from Galway United. The young Irishman will sign his first professional contract at Newcastle on January 28, his 18th birthday.

Fitzgerald impressed Newcastle staff during a trial at the club prompting them to make a move.

He is expected to link up with Newcastle’s under-21s upon arrival.
