Miguel Almiron is set to move back to the USA after six years at Newcastle United.
Fans are sure to remember Almiron for his efforts during the season when Newcastle qualified for the Champions League. The Paraguayan scored 11 goals that season and was among the club’s top scorers that season.
Almiron is now about to leave Newcastle to return to Atlanta United, his former club where he had spent two years.
The 30-year-old has fallen out of favour with Toon boss Eddie Howe this season, only making seven appearances in the Premier League.
Reports suggested that Almiron had played his Newcastle game in their FA Cup win against Bromley earlier in the month. However, Atlanta are now happy to wait for Almiron – the Paraguayan can feature in Newcastle’s last games in January before jetting off to Atlanta.
While Newcastle fans are awaiting the announcement of his departure, it was the words of a former Toon ace that could have played a big part in why he joined the club in the first place.

Diego Gavilan’s five-word message to Miguel Almiron
Former Newcastle man Diego Gavilan’s time on Tyneside was short-lived, but it was enough for him to persuade Almiron to join the club in 2019.
Gavilan was signed by Newcastle club legend Sir Bobby Robson in 2000. However, the Paraguayan only made seven appearances for the club before signing for Internacional in 2003.
When Almiron signed for Newcastle, it was revealed that Gavilan had spoken to him before he made the move. Speaking to the Guardian, Gavilan said that when he spoke with Almiron, he told him: “You should go for it.”
The rest is history. Almiron has made 222 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 30 goals and bagging 12 assists.
It is sad to see Almiron go. Although performances have not been exceptional in the last 18 months, he always worked hard to try and make an impact when he was on the pitch.
Newcastle’s tribute to Almiron
Almiron’s contributions will not be forgotten by fans in a hurry. There was a lot of buzz around Tyneside upon his arrival. He was signing for a club record fee – breaking the previous record that had been held for 14 years.
Before Newcastle’s defeat to Bournemouth, fan-led group Wor Flags made a display for Almiron as a tribute for his time at the club.
Upon his arrival at St James’ Park for the game, fans pleaded with Almiron to stay. It looks like it will be to no avail as Newcastle will pick up around £10m from the deal.
Wherever he goes for the remainder of his career, football fans in England will know him most for his time at Newcastle where he became loved, loathed and ultimately accepted.
