What Miguel Almiron did when a Newcastle United fan asked him to stay

Miguel Almiron’s time at Newcastle United could well be coming to an end.

While previously an important part of the set-up at Newcastle, it seems Almiron is closing in on an exit.

Indeed, Newcastle are set to accept a bid for Almiron from his former club Atlanta United.

The forward has hardly featured this season under Eddie Howe, with the Newcastle United manager having largely preferred Jacob Murphy on the right wing.

Even Anthony Gordon and Joelinton have been tried out of position there, perhaps indicating the lack of trust Howe has in Almiron these days.

Newcastle fans paid tribute to Almiron before Saturday’s 4-1 loss to Bournemouth at St James’ Park, unveiling a banner reading ‘Wor Miggy’.

Still, it seems a transfer is close, six years after joining the club from the Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit.

Almiron did not get on the pitch as Newcastle saw their run of nine consecutive victories ended by the Cherries in emphatic fashion.

He was, however, in the squad for what was a thoroughly miserable defeat to Howe’s former club.

Almiron was videoed arriving at St James’ before the game alongside teammates Sandro Tonali and Joelinton.

One young supporter is seen (in a video posted by Dominic Scurr on social media platform X) saying “Almiron, please stay!”

The forward looks up at the fan and smiles while giving him a thumbs up.

Newcastle United are taking a risk with Miguel Almiron

Almiron’s agent has already confirmed his client is unhappy at Newcastle, which makes sense given his lack of action.

The decision to sell the forward itself is not much of an issue. However, the fact Newcastle are unlikely to replace Almiron this month threatens to leave Howe a little light in attacking areas.

Perhaps Newcastle can’t pick and choose and few would doubt they need to become better sellers.

However, it remains to be seen if the club live to regret their decision.
