Newcastle United are set to accept a bid from Atlanta United for Miguel Almiron.

Almiron has been subject to a Newcastle departure for more than a year now. The 30-year-old nearly joined Al-Shabab in January 2024 but turned down the move at the last minute.

In the summer, Charlotte FC came in for Almiron, but their valuation wasn’t to Newcastle’s liking. Charlotte have since been in for Almiron in January, but have failed in their efforts to land him.

Clubs across the world like Olympiakos and Botafogo have been linked with the winger but now it looks like Almiron will return to his former club.

Almiron signed from Atlanta United for a then-club record fee of £21million. He has since made 222 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 30 goals and bagging 12 assists.

However, his short cameo in Newcastle’s win against Wolves looks to be his last.

The club now need to consider their options away from Almiron, but the latest transfer report has suggested there may be a problem until the end of the season.

Newcastle won’t replace Miguel Almiron

The Magpies have relied on Jacob Murphy for a large portion of the Premier League season, leaving Almiron with a number of substitute appearances.

The 30-year-old started in Newcastle’s win against Bromley in the FA Cup on Sunday. Now, according to the Daily Mail, Atlanta United’s bid of around £10m is set to be accepted.

However, Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell reportedly will not sign a replacement for Almiron in January.

This has major repercussions on Newcastle’s right side of attack. For the next month, Murphy is their only natural option on the wing.

The Newcastle boss could’ve looked to Harvey Barnes as another option to take Almiron’s spot in the pecking order, but Barnes is going to miss the next month of action with a thigh strain.

Almiron’s contract runs out in the summer of 2026, so this is one of the last opportunities to bag a decent fee for the Paraguayan who is keen on a return to his former club.

Almiron overstayed his welcome at Newcastle

When Almiron signed, fans were buzzing at the prospect of a young winger who was quick and had a great highlight package.

Many fans will remember Almiron for his sensational form during the 2022/23 season which helped Newcastle qualify for Champions League football.

However, Almiron’s form in recent seasons has left many feeling like his exit should’ve come much sooner.

Last season, Almiron only scored three goals and bagged one assist in 33 Premier League games. In 12 fewer games, Murphy has managed to score just as many and bag six more assists this season thanks to his purple patch in December.

Fans will be delighted to see Almiron go for the fee that is being reported. Even if Newcastle don’t invest in a replacement in January, it gives them more opportunity to sign a desired target in the summer.
