What Newcastle United fans did for Miguel Almiron ahead of transfer exit

Newcastle United endured a rather miserable day at the office on Saturday.

Eddie Howe’s side went into Saturday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth off the back of nine consecutive victories across all competitions and were going for a club record-breaking tenth in a row.

As is seemingly always the case with Newcastle, however, they failed to show up when a relative amount of pressure was on.

Indeed, Howe’s side were absolutely thrashed by Bournemouth and the Cherries were unlucky to have only won 4-1.

The hosts just failed to get going. Lewis Hall had an unusually poor game for Newcastle, while Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon struggled against Bournemouth.

Still, what may have been missed given the dreadful nature of the result was a touching tribute to Miguel Almiron.

Almiron is expected to leave Newcastle in order to rejoin former club Atlanta United in Major League Soccer (MLS).

The 30-year-old, however, was named on the bench against Bournemouth – albeit he did not get on the pitch. Will Osula was brought on as Howe’s side chased a goal before they conceded two late goals to rub salt into the wounds on a dreadful afternoon.

But it was promising to see Newcastle fans pay tribute to Almiron.

As pictured by Lee Ryder on social media platform X, the excellent fan group Wor Flags held up a banner before kick-off reading ‘Wor Miggy’.

Newcastle United will not replace Miguel Almiron

Almiron deserves respect for being a part of Newcastle’s journey. Brought to the club by Rafa Benitez, he may have struggled to wholly convince on a consistent basis but has produced some great moments.

His purple patch of form in 2022/23 helped propel Newcastle into the Champions League, where he famously scored against Paris Saint-Germain in a 4-1 victory.

While the time may be right to go now, it seems Newcastle will not be replacing Almiron in the January transfer market.

It remains to be seen if that is a mistake…
