Transfer deadline day has arrived, and it could be a very quiet one for Newcastle United.

It threatened to be a busy end to the transfer window for Eddie Howe’s side, but that has not happened. Newcastle have needed to sell before they can buy all month, but have not moved anyone on.

Kieran Trippier is staying put after multiple bids from Bayern Munich. Callum Wilson looks to be staying put despite being offered around by his agent. And Miguel Almiron is staying put too, with his move to Saudi Arabia collapsing.

That means that it will likely be a very quiet day for the Magpies, even if fans will continue to dream about a possible arrival.

We are no different, and have identified the one player Newcastle United could really do with signing on transfer deadline day – if the money was available.

Morgan Gibbs-White would be Newcastle’s dream deadline day signing

Morgan Gibbs-White was linked with a move to Newcastle when it emerged that Almiron could be leaving St James’ Park.

The Nottingham Forest star was named as a possible replacement, which was a very enticing prospect for the Toon Army. While Almiron is a good player, Gibbs-White would be a definite improvement.

His flexibility could be a huge asset to Eddie Howe, and that is why the 23-year-old is the one player who Newcastle should sign on deadline day – if they had the funds to do a deal.

Newcastle have been looking for a ‘number eight’ midfielder all month, and believe that Gibbs-White could fill that role. He certainly has the energy for it, as well as the ball-carrying ability.

But he is best used as an attacking midfielder, which is a position that Howe would like to look at, having previously tried to sign James Maddison.

And MGW is also capable of playing out wide, which would help Newcastle deal with the potential injury crisis they have up front. Callum Wilson is injured, and it looks like Alexander Isak could be too. That will likely result in Anthony Gordon playing up front, meaning there will be a vacancy out wide. It is a vacancy that Gibbs-White could fill.

That kind of versatility would be invaluable to Newcastle, as they continue to deal with multiple injuries in various positions.

And Howe knows firsthand how good Gibbs-White is, having seen him tear his Newcastle side apart at St James’ Park on Boxing Day. He was outstanding on December 26th, as Forest beat Newcastle 3-1.

It is pure fantasy and a deal is almost certainly not going to happen, but Morgan Gibbs-White would be a dream signing for Newcastle United on transfer deadline day. However, don’t expect this dream to become a reality.
