Newcastle United may just be targeting someone who can answer all of their problems.
The Magpies are in a really difficult position right now, with profit and sustainability rules meaning they need to sell before they buy.
They currently need a new midfielder, with Joelinton injured for the rest of the season and Sandro Tonali suspended. Eddie Howe is light of options in that area of the pitch, which is why Newcastle are looking to sign a ‘number eight’ before the transfer window closes next week.
But that might only be possible if someone leaves. And if someone does leave, they will need to be replaced. Selling Miguel Almiron might allow you to bring someone in, but suddenly you are a player short in attack. And if you directly replace him then you still haven’t solved your midfield conundrum.
And that is why Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White could be the perfect addition. He has been linked with a move to Tyneside as of late, and the Athletic’s Chris Waugh has explained why he is someone who club officials are really fond of.
Newcastle are big fans of Morgan Gibbs-White
Journalist Chris Waugh has been speaking about Newcastle’s interest in Gibbs-White on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne.
“Someone they really like is Morgan Gibbs-White,” he said.
“He obviously played very well at St James’ Park on Boxing Day.
“He’s interesting because I think he would suggest that his best position is as a number 10. If he was to come in, Newcastle might have to change the way they play.
“But also I think Newcastle see him potentially playing as a number eight, almost as they saw James Maddison being able to play that role.
“Also, he can play out wide. You can adapt your style to a certain extent but he can also fit in to the system that they’ve got.
“They really like him, as a lot of clubs do around England.”

Gibbs-White could solve all of Newcastle’s problems
Gibbs-White ticks a lot of boxes. Newcastle believe he can operate as a deeper midfielder, using his energy and dribbling ability to drive up the pitch.
But he can also play out wide, which would mean he could fill in for either Miguel Almiron or Callum Wilson if they were sold. Of course, we’re not saying Wilson is a winger but if we had someone else in that position then Anthony Gordon would be able to fill in centrally if required.
And Gibbs-White can play as an attacking midfielder, which is something that Newcastle do not have. They have tried to sign one and would like to in the future, which is why Forest’s number 10 could be a very smart addition.
The main issue would be the money, but Gibbs-White could be absolutely priceless to Newcastle Untied if he arrives this month.
