Newcastle United have some very exciting players lined up this month, but the money is not there to bring them in.

The Magpies want to sign Amadou Onana as a midfielder, while a more attacking target has now emerged following reports that Miguel Almiron could be sold.

The 29-year-old is being linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, with Newcastle looking to receive £30million for the Paraguayan.

That would be a huge financial boost for Eddie Howe‘s side, and could allow him to reinvest in a big way. And it will certainly take a lot of money to sign the player who Newcastle have earmarked as a potential Miguel Almiron replacement.

Newcastle interested in signing Morgan Gibbs-White

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle are interested in signing Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest if Almiron leaves the club this month.

The report states that Toon scouts have watched Gibbs-White extensively, including in Forest’s 3-1 win over Newcastle on Boxing Day.

However, the Telegraph do state that any deal will be difficult to do with Forest keen to keep the 23-year-old at the City Ground.

How he compares to Newcastle winger Miguel Almiron

That is no surprise, as Gibbs-White is one of Nuno Espirito Santo’s most important players. He has been immense for Forest since they returned to the Premier League, costing £42.5million from Wolves in the summer of 2022.

You have to imagine it would take that amount of money and more to tempt Forest into selling, so there is no chance of this deal happening if Newcastle do not sell anyone.

But the prospect of replacing Almiron with Gibbs-White is massively exciting. At 23, he is much younger than Miggy, while he is also much more versatile. He can play as an attacking midfielder or on either flank, while his numbers in the final third are just as good.

MGW has got six goal contributions from 22 appearances this season, while Miggy has got seven from 31 games. Last season, Gibbs-White got 13 goal contributions in 38 games for Forest, while Almiron recorded 15 in 41 games for the Magpies.

Gibbs-White has played alongside Anthony Gordon before

A move for Gibbs-White would certainly intrigue Toon winger Anthony Gordon, as he has a good relationship with Nottingham Forest’s number 10. They have played together at youth level for England, and were part of the Under-21s side that won the Euros last summer.

Gibbs-White has previously raved about Gordon, calling him ‘athletically incredible‘, so the chance to play alongside him at club level could be appealing.

But whether or not Gibbs-White is up for the move remains to be seen. That is not the main issue though – the main issue is how much he might cost.
