‘Fundamental’ Newcastle United star is now ‘desperate’ to leave despite Eddie Howe’s wishes

Newcastle United are expected to be busy in the January transfer window with both incomings and outgoings.

After a disappointing summer transfer window, there is now huge pressure on Paul Mitchell and the recruitment team to get deals over the line in January.

Newcastle United missed out on top target Marc Guehi and also failed to land a right-sided winger despite a late £50m bid for Anthony Elanga.

Expect a new winger and centre-back to be at the forefront of Newcastle’s transfer plans again in 2025, and reportedly Mitchell will be handed a £70m budget in January.

New arrivals will be expected, but Newcastle may also be busy with outgoings with Kieran Trippier still pushing to leave the club.

Kieran Trippier ‘desperate’ to leave Newcastle United

Kieran Trippier asked to leave Newcastle United twice this summer but ended up staying put at St James’ Park.

Trippier had been linked to West Ham and Everton after it became clear he wanted to leave, but English clubs ran out of time to get a deal done.

Trippier was then linked with a move to Turkey with Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce interested in signing the former England international. There were also links to Saudi Arabia.

The Sun now report that Trippier is still “desperate” to leave Newcastle when the transfer window reopens in January.

They add that Fenerbahce, AC Milan and Atalanta are all showing an interest in a January deal for the 34-year-old.

Eddie Howe wants to keep hold of Kieran Trippier

Eddie Howe has been a huge admirer of Trippier ever since his £12m move to Newcastle in January 2022. The Newcastle boss described him as a “fundamental” part of his team earlier this year.

Howe insisted that Trippier has a major part to play this season despite his exit rumours, but so far in 2024/25 he has only played 239 minutes of football with Tino Livramento starting as the first-choice right-back.

The previous report adds that Howe is eager to keep hold of Trippier beyond January but it seems the full-back is willing to go against his wishes and leave anyway.

Should Trippier leave, Newcastle have been linked with potential replacements such as £19m-rated Denzel Dumfries.
