How much Newcastle United can spend in January as Paul Mitchell handed big transfer budget

The one silver lining to Newcastle United’s disappointing summer window is that they have more to spend in January.

It was a frustrating summer for Newcastle, who failed to land any of their top transfer targets despite making bids late into deadline day.

Following the appointment of Paul Mitchell as sporting director at St James’ Park, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi emerged as Newcastle’s top-choice target.

However, Newcastle were unable to get a deal over the line despite making multiple bids for the £70m-rated centre-back.

Attention then turned to signing a new right winger and Newcastle made a late £50m bid for Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga, but the deadline day offer was rejected by the Premier League outfit.

There is now huge pressure on Paul Mitchell to deliver in January with reports that his position as director is already under threat.

Newcastle United’s January transfer budget

After submitting bids for both Guehi and Elanga, it became clear that Newcastle did have money to spend in the summer despite the budget being shackled by Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Having ended the summer with a transfer profit of £6.2m, Newcastle will finally have a sizeable budget to invest in Eddie Howe‘s squad over January.

The Chronicle report that Newcastle will have a transfer war chest of around £70m for the January window.

Newcastle have been tipped to return for Marc Guehi after retaining an interest in the England international and a £70m budget is more than enough to get a deal over the line.

Palace were holding out for around £70m in the summer, but with his contract ticking down and a poor start to the Premier League season, their asking price should plummet.

Newcastle have two key areas to address in January

Newcastle have made a great start to the season and find themselves up in third in the Premier League table despite having not played particularly well in any of their games so far.

If Howe can maintain Newcastle’s form and keep the club in the race for a top-four finish, the January window will be a golden opportunity to keep spirits high and address two key areas.

Even with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles targeting a return in the New Year, a top-class centre-back should remain a priority, whether that be Guehi or another of Newcastle’s top targets.

There should also be enough flexibility in the budget to sign a winger, with Miguel Almiron only playing 63 minutes so far this season.

Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes have both enjoyed strong starts to the season, but behind them, there is a sheer drop in quality and a specialist right-sided winger should be a top target.

Leroy Sane has been mentioned as a target, but the German winger’s wages make a January deal extremely unlikely.
