The ‘problem’ Kieran Trippier is facing as he tries to get move away from Newcastle

Kieran Trippier still wants to leave Newcastle United.

The 33-year-old has been a pivotal player at St James’ Park since his arrival in January 2022, but it had looked like his Newcastle United career was going to come to an end this summer.

It was reported that Trippier probably would be sold by Newcastle, while the defender has been leapfrogged by Tino Livramento as Eddie Howe’s first choice right-back.

That resulted in Trippier telling Howe he wants to leave Newcastle, which is a message that he has now reinforced to the club.

Kieran Trippier tells Newcastle he wants to leave again

That is according to HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey, who has spoken to Geordie Boot Boys about Kieran Trippier‘s future at St James’ Park.

There is still the chance he could leave, despite most of Europe’s biggest transfer windows closing.

“There are only so many options for Trippier,” he said.

“There are not too many transfer windows that are still open. Turkey is an option for him, there is interest there from all the big clubs.

“Kieran Trippier has reiterated the fact that he wants to leave Newcastle United. That’s not a huge surprise. He’s had the captain’s armband taken off him, which I think Eddie Howe has got off quite lightly with.

“I don’t know this, but I would imagine he is still disappointed that he was denied that move to Bayern Munich in January. They have gone elsewhere since.

“Turkey is an interesting one. There is about half a dozen clubs who would take him, but it would depend on the deal. It would be a loan with some sort of option, but Newcastle are not going to give him away for free, which I think is part of the problem.”

Newcastle have to keep Trippier until January

The Trippier situation is very curious. Throughout the summer, it has felt likely that he would leave.

Yet the closer we got to the deadline, the less talk there was of him departing St James’ Park.

A move to the Middle East felt possible, then it was reported that Kieran Trippier did not want to play in Saudi Arabia.

Understandably, he wants to play at the highest level possible, but talk of a Premier League move to Everton failed to materialise after the Toffees’ initial interest.

Now it looks like Turkey could be Trippier’s best option, which would at least potentially give him the chance to play in Europe again.

But one of the issues is money. Newcastle are not going to give Trippier away, despite his desire to leave.

That is a problem, as is Newcastle’s lack of defensive options. Had Marc Guehi arrived in the summer, the prospect of Trippier leaving probably would have been much more likely. Instead, Newcastle need Trippier to provide direct cover for Livramento, as the Magpies’ other right-back, Emil Krafth, is now the reserve centre-back.

The Trippier situation is a big problem, but it is one that must be put on hold until January. Newcastle simply must keep Trippier at the club until reinforcements can arrive.
