Eddie Howe now admits £40m star may never play for Newcastle again

Newcastle United may have to get used to the prospect of losing key players.

Though that hasn’t been something Newcastle have had to consider much since the PIF takeover, FFP frustrations behind the scenes have left the club in a difficult position.

Not able to have brought in any players thus far, players are being linked away.

Though Kieran Trippier looks like staying for now along with Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson is being tipped for an exit.

Then there’s the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton. The former is reportedly expected to leave this summer, while the latter could follow as a result of a contract dispute.

Now, Eddie Howe has spoken on Joelinton.

Joelinton transfer news: Eddie Howe shares Newcastle latest

Speaking to reporters ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Fulham, Howe confirmed the Brazilian may have to be sold if he does not agree to an extension, with his current contract due to expire in the summer of 2025.

Currently injured and likely to miss the rest of the season, he could have played his final game for the club.

“It’s a possibility but I hope that’s not the case,” Howe told The Chronicle (about the 27-year-old potentially having played his last game for the club).

“I want him to stay. Before a player signs a contract he has to be happy with everything and so it’s a possibility he’ll be sold in the summer.”

Joelinton transfer news: Gutting for Newcastle

Clearly, Joelinton could still agree to a new deal and crisis would be averted.

Still, even the prospect of losing him is a major worry. So important to the cause and a shining example of the work Howe has done on the coaching field, watching him continue his rapid rise from a £40m flop to a fully-fledged Brazilian international elsewhere would be truly gutting.

Hailed as a “machine” by teammate Trippier, not even that description does Joelinton enough justice.

Hopefully, a resolution can be found.

Newcastle simply cannot do without him.
