Newcastle United supporters were rocked with a report that Joelinton could leave the club on Thursday night.
The 27-year-old is currently out of action due to injury, and is set to miss the rest of the season after being forced off during the derby win over Sunderland.
That is a massive blow for Eddie Howe, who views Joelinton as one of his most important players.
However, a report from the Daily Mail has suggested that his future at St James’ Park is in doubt.
Joelinton struggling to agree new contract with Newcastle
According to the Daily Mail, Joelinton has so far been unable to agree a new contract with Newcastle United.
The report states that the club and player are at a stalemate over wages, with the Brazilian’s representatives wanting a sum that would make him Newcastle’s best paid player.
The story from Craig Hope added that the Magpies could be forced to sell Joelinton if an agreement cannot be reached, with his contract due to expire in 2025. They would effectively need to cash in on him in the summer, or risk losing him for nothing a year later. If they did sell him, it would mean he has played his final game for the club.

Newcastle still expect him to stay
Now the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has weighed in on the story, verifying what Hope has said about Joelinton. However, Edwards has added that Newcastle still expect the midfielder to extend his stay on Tyneside.
He wrote on X: “On Joelinton, everything Craig Hope has written is correct but it’s also part of new contract negotiations. NUFC still believe he will sign a new one but if he doesn’t, they’d have to consider selling in the summer. He wants to get paid, club have a wage structure in place.“
Losing Joelinton forever would be a disaster
It really would be awful to see Joelinton leave the club. We are a different team without him, and that is certainly not for the better.
He has struggled for fitness at times this season, and the second half of the campaign is going to be much tougher without him.
But it should not mean that Joelinton has played his final game for Newcastle United. Negotiations may have stalled for now, but hopefully a compromise can be reached to extend his stay on Tyneside.
There is a lot of talk about Newcastle needing to sell their biggest players to help with profit and sustainability rules, but they also need to keep their best players to continue progressing as a club.
Joelinton falls into that category, so it is encouraging that Newcastle still believe he will sign a contract extension.
