Alexander Isak ran the show as Newcastle United beat Arsenal 2-0 in the Carabao Cup.

It is advantage to Newcastle United after the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon both scoring in North London.

The Magpies now boast a two-goal advantage for the second leg at St James’ Park which will take place on February 5th.

Isak scored in seven consecutive games in the lead-up to the Arsenal clash, and he extended that record by opening the scoring against the Gunners.

Earlier this season, Isak scored the only goal of the game as Newcastle beat Arsenal in the Premier League but this time around Anthony Gordon joined in and doubled Newcastle’s lead early in the second half.

What Mikel Arteta said about Alexander Isak

After scoring one and setting up the other, it is blindingly clear that Isak was the best player on the pitch against Arsenal.

After the full-time whistle, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta gave his assessment of Isak’s performance and he sounded slightly jealous of Newcastle’s star striker.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Arteta said: “He was involved in both goals, unfortunately the two times that he had the ball in the box and that’s what you have when you have the real quality up front.

“They can make the difference. They’re very clinical.”

Clinical finishing is exactly what Arsenal lacked against Newcastle, which explains why the Gunners are so desperate to sign Isak in 2025.

Mikel Arteta wants to bring Alexander Isak to Arsenal

Arsenal’s interest in Isak dates back to the summer, but Newcastle were able to fend off any bidders from the superb Swede.

Newcastle have set a £150m asking price for Isak for 2025, and frankly that still seems too low given his current run of form.

Arsenal have been urged to sign Isak by Paul Merson, who told the Gunners to “break the bank” to sign him this month. With one foot in the Carabao Cup final and Newcastle chasing Champions League qualification, an exit this month seems extremely unlikely.

It seems even more unlikely that he would move to North London after Arsenal fans booed Isak at The Emirates.

If Newcastle are able to continue this run of form and end the season on a high, then there is every chance that Isak could extend his Newcastle contract over the summer.
