Miguel Almiron will not be leaving Newcastle United and signing for Charlotte FC.

The 30-year-old’s Newcastle United future is very much up in the air right now, and speculation over a move away from St James’ Park had intensified.

MLS side Charlotte FC have been in talks to sign Miguel Almiron, as they aimed to bring the Paraguayan back to the United States.

It was a chance for the Magpies to move on a player they are willing to get rid of, but Newcastle’s asking price for Almiron was expected to be a problem.

Newcastle wanted just over £15million for Almiron, which was double what Charlotte FC were offering. And with the MLS transfer window closing on August 14th, a deal for Miggy seemed extremely unlikely.

Miguel Almiron is not leaving Newcastle United to sign for Charlotte FC

Now the talks have ended, with Fabrizio Romano providing an update on Charlotte FC’s pursuit of Newcastle United attacker Miguel Almiron.

He wrote on X: “Charlotte FC leave the negotiations for Miguel Almirón, deal collapsed and now OFF. Despite initial agreement on contract terms, no agreement between clubs as Newcastle request was too high for Charlotte FC.”

Selling Almiron would help Newcastle’s PSR situation

It is a real shame to see talks collapse, as this was a great chance for Newcastle to sell a first-team player, which is something they need to do amid their PSR situation.

Almiron is a decent candidate to depart, as he is pretty much all paid up in terms of PSR. For example, a £20million departure for Almiron would hand Newcastle a £17million PSR boost.

However, the money on offer was always going to be an issue, with the MLS transfer record currently standing at just over £12million.

Miguel Almiron had agreed to exit Newcastle

But what is interesting is that Romano states that Almiron had agreed a contract with Charlotte FC. He was willing to make the move, seemingly ready to call time on his Newcastle United career.

Almiron, who cost £21million in 2019, obviously has history in the MLS, having been a talisman for Atlanta United. The chance to return to America appears to have appealed to the attacker, but it is a move that has collapsed.

But with an agreement in place to leave Newcastle, it will be interesting to see if this leads to interest from other clubs. Almiron has now shown a willingness to move during the transfer window, which was not the case in January when there was the chance for him to go to Saudi Arabia.

There is still interest from Saudi Arabia in Almiron, and that could be a possible destination for him. However, wanting to return to the USA and move to Saudi Arabia are two very different things.

For now, Almiron to Charlotte FC is off, and that is a major shame.
