Newcastle United may need to sell before they buy once again, as PSR continues to cause problems.
The Magpies are currently aiming to complete a deal for Marc Guehi, with Crystal Palace weighing up whether or not the accept Newcastle United‘s third offer.
Newcastle are confident they will sign Guehi, in what will be a huge deal. He is going to cost in excess of £50million, with Palace wanting to receive more than £65million.
It will be a huge investment, and one that will limit Newcastle’s spending capacity for the rest of the summer. That is a concern, as the Magpies are also in the market for a winger.
Newcastle United could sell Miguel Almiron
If Newcastle want to make more signings after they hopefully land Guehi, there will need to be outgoings.
Newcastle need to sell before they buy due to PSR, and one contender to leave St James’ Park is Miguel Almiron.
Charlotte FC have held talks about signing Almiron, which could allow him to return to the MLS. However, that might not be possible due to Newcastle’s asking price for Almiron.
It was previously reported that Newcastle want around £20million for Almiron, which is what they paid for him in 2019.

How selling Miguel Almiron will impact Newcastle’s PSR situation
A deal worth that amount could give Newcastle a significant PSR boost, with TBR Football‘s finance expert Adam Williams explaining to Geordie Boot Boys what an Almiron departure could mean for the Magpies.
“Almiron signed for £20million in January 2019 on a five-and-a-half-year deal,” he said.
“That means his book value decreased £3.636million each year until he signed his new contract midway through 2022/23.
“His book value at that time would have been £5.45million, which the club will have then re-amortised over the length of his new three-and-a-half-year deal.
“So a year and a half later, his book value – at the time of speaking – will be just over £3million.
“Whatever his sale price, you minus the £3million from that figure and that is the net impact on your PSR calculation for this year. If Almiron went for £20million, then Newcastle would have a net impact of £17million.”
Newcastle need to become better sellers
That would give Newcastle capacity to spend before the transfer window closes, but it is all dependent on Toon officials finding a suitable seller who is willing to take Almiron on at a price that is right for the Magpies.
That will not be easy, and it is further evidence that Newcastle United need to become better sellers in the world of PSR – something which is vitally important according to Adam Williams.
“Newcastle aren’t out of the woods in terms of PSR and there is an acceptance that they need to move towards a player trading model.
“Their net spend under PIF, in terms of the headline figures, is about £350million. In terms of amortisation, they will be counting the legacy cost of that with PSR for a number of years. However, Darren Eales has always insisted that the club will always spend the absolute maximum allowable under PSR.
“And the fact that their £70million loss in 2021/22 has now dropped out of the three-year calculation and is being replaced by what is expected to be a slightly more modest loss gives them some breathing space.
“However, I do still think profit from player sales might be needed. I suspect what they might do, and I’ve seen this suggested elsewhere, is wait until January, see how their season is panning out and calibrate their approach accordingly.”
