Two transfers Newcastle could complete on January transfer deadline day

Now before we go any further, we must add a rather significant caveat to this piece.

Newcastle United, like all fans of the club know, are in a sticky situation at the moment and have been since the January transfer window opened.

The Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules mean the Toon are unable to splurge large sums of cash this month and that is evident in the fact they haven’t even bought a single player yet.

Essentially, playing personnel will have to leave St James’ Park today before any incoming business is conducted – and that could still happen.

Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier and Miguel Almiron have all been linked with moves out of the club and while those departures are very unlikely – Trippier and Almiron in particular – anything can happen.

So with that in mind, here are two possible transfer options Newcastle could pursue right up until the last second of transfer deadline day provided funds are sourced from their own player sales.

Jacob Ramsey

Reports linking Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle popped up on Monday with the Toon said to be keen on bolstering their midfield department due to an injury suffered by Joelinton and Sandro Tonali’s suspension.

Of course, a player sale would have to made first but Aston Villa’s Ramsey, according to The Athletic, has been interesting Newcastle this month and an approach has been said to have been made.

Villa boss Unai Emery is 100% clear that he wants Ramsey to stay in Birmingham beyond January despite claims the club could rake in £50m for the player.

Amadou Onana

Newcastle have been tracking Everton midfielder Amadou Onana ever since he made the move to Merseyside from Lille in 2022.

And according to The Telegraph, he was brought up during a meeting involving the Toon hierarchy this almost two weeks ago.

If any deal were to happen before the deadline tonight, Newcastle would look to strike a loan-to-buy deal which would then see Onana move up north for between £50-60m.

According to HITC Football transfer expert Graeme Bailey, the higher end of that figure is likely to be what will prise Onana out of Everton, who have been dealing with financial issues of their own.

A further report from iNews stated that Everton will not sanction an Onana exit in January but if a legitimate offer like the one described above is actually submitted, the Toffees may take time to consider all options before deciding on rejecting it.

It’s a long shot but there’s definitely interest in Onana from a Newcastle perspective. Again, this is more likely to be done in the summer if at all.
