This time last year, Newcastle United were welcoming Anthony Gordon from Everton. 12 months later, the Magpies want to sign one of his former teammates.
Newcastle went big last year, investing heavily in Anthony Gordon to sign him from Everton. He cost an initial £40million, and has proven to be a hit. It took him some time to settle, but now he is one of Eddie Howe’s most important players.
Just like the January transfer window of 2023, Newcastle are targeting someone from Everton. They want to sign Amadou Onana, and have been eyeing up a deal for the Belgian following the news that Joelinton is going to be out for the season.
Eddie Howe is well aware that he needs another body in midfield, and Onana looks like the ideal candidate. He is someone who Newcastle have tracked for a long time, as they continue to be linked with the 22-year-old.
But for all the speculation, it does not sound like Everton are going to sell Onana to Newcastle this week – or anyone for that matter.

Everton unlikely to sell Amadou Onana this week
According to iNews, it is going to be very difficult for anyone to sign Amadou Onana before the transfer window closes on Thursday night.
They state that the Toffees have not received a single offer for the midfielder, nor do they need to sell despite their current financial situation.
The report from iNews adds that as we get closer to the deadline, even a big money offer might not be enough to tempt Everton to sell.
More bad news for Newcastle
Given Everton’s stance, it feels all but certain that Onana will not be signing for Newcastle United this week.
Even a big money offer might not be enough to convince Everton to sell, which is of no use to cash-strapped Newcastle. Well, they have money – lots of it – but they aren’t allowed to spend it because of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
PSR is hamstringing Newcastle right now, while they are unable to move on any of their saleable assets. It looks like Miguel Almiron is staying put, having been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.
The Magpies need to sell before they buy, but even that might not be enough to bring Onana to Tyneside.
