Newcastle have ‘definite interest’ in 22-year-old midfielder, Toon officials really like him

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has played down talk of the club trying to sign Jacob Ramsey, but he is certainly a player who is on the Magpies’ radar.

That is the view of the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, whose colleague David Ornstein broke the initial news about Newcastle approaching Aston Villa about the 22-year-old.

It was claimed that the Magpies had shown an interest in Ramsey, who could be available for around £50million. Talk of interest from Tyneside certainly made sense, especially given Joelinton’s injury.

Newcastle need another body in midfield, and Ramsey had emerged as a really exciting option. But then Unai Emery stated that the youngster was going nowhere, while David Ornstein added that a move away from Villa Park was unlikely this month.

Eddie Howe rejected claims of an approach from Newcastle on Monday, and now the Athletic’s Chris Waugh has given his thoughts on the situation.

Newcastle really like Jacob Ramsey

On the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, Waugh shared what he knows about Jacob Ramsey being a target for Newcastle.

“Our understanding is that he’s a player who Newcastle United like a lot,” he said.

“There has been at least some sort of discussion somewhere. Howe was asked specifically if there had been an approach for Ramsey and he said no, that’s not correct. That might come down to semantics and you get it a lot in transfer windows – what’s an approach, what’s an enquiry. I think that’s what this one has come down to.

“There’s definite interest there, but it seems like it will be a very difficult deal to do financially.”

Hopefully Newcastle target him again this summer

Since Newcastle are such big fans of Ramsey, you would like to think he will be on the club’s radar again in the summer. By then the Magpies will be able to spend again, but that is not possible right now.

Profit and sustainability rules are stopping Newcastle from spending any money this month, unless they sell someone first. But that does not look likely to happen, with Miguel Almiron due to remain on Tyneside.

With Almiron staying put, Newcastle will not be able to finance a move for Ramsey. That is a shame as he is a major talent, and looks perfectly suited to the ongoing project at St James’ Park.

Hopefully we reignite our interest in the summer, and a deal might appeal to Villa, as whatever fee they get will go down as pure profit, which will help them with regards to PSR.
