Newcastle United fans are bracing themselves for what could be a very busy end to the January transfer window.
Eddie Howe needs reinforcements, but Newcastle need to sell before they can buy due to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
There are a lot of spinning plates on Tyneside right now, with multiple players linked with leaving, and various replacements being discussed.
It could be all or nothing heading into the final few days of the January transfer window, and HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey has spoke to Geordie Boot Boys about some of the goings on at St James’ Park right now regarding transfers.
Bayern Munich could return for Kieran Trippier
Kieran Trippier has been heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich as of late, and we asked if the deal is now completely off after a third bid was rejected.
“Newcastle want £20million, it’s as simple as that. If Bayern offered £20million, he’d have gone. Kieran Trippier wanted to go, he wanted that move, he’d spoken to Harry Kane. Everything was agreed.
“He’s a player I think Newcastle will be moving on in the summer anyway. At the moment it’s off, but if Bayern come in and step it up again you never know. But I’m told £20million was the price Newcastle wanted and Bayern just weren’t willing to go that high.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Bayern came back.”
Alfie Harrison won’t cost Newcastle much
We asked about the news that Newcastle are set to sign 18-year-old midfielder Alfie Harrison from Manchester City.
“It won’t be much [the fee]. It won’t be a huge amount, there’ll be a bit of a sell-on. You wouldn’t say it’s a coup but it’s a good signing.”
Morgan Gibbs-White is a ‘long-term target’
We asked about the Magpies’ interest in Morgan Gibbs-White, with the Nottingham Forest star being considered as a replacement for Miguel Almiron.
“He’s a long-term target. We know the club like him but he’s going to be very expensive now. He’s played pretty well for Forest.
“I don’t see that happening this month but they [Forest] are looking at Gio Reyna – but that’s going to be difficult with Marseille coming in for him now.
“It’s a tough one with Gibbs-White. He’s a player they do like but not for this month I don’t think.”

Amadou Onana will be very expensive
We asked about a potential move for long-term target Amadou Onana.
“He’s very expensive. We’re talking £60million. He’s a player who Newcastle liked before Everton signed him so they’ve done their work on him, they know all about him. But even with departures, I don’t think he’s the one for January.”
West Ham did what Newcastle wouldn’t for Kalvin Phillips
We asked about Newcastle missing out on Kalvin Phillips, with the midfielder now a West Ham player.
“West Ham are paying his whole wages. They’re paying £160,000-a-week and a loan fee as well. That’s just not something Newcastle, or anyone else, were willing to do. Newcastle weren’t willing to make Kalvin Phillips the highest paid player at the club, and that’s what he would have been.
“It just wasn’t doable.”
