The Magpies thought Marc Guehi would be a Newcastle United player by now.
Marc Guehi was Newcastle United’s top target during the summer, with Paul Mitchell investing so much time in trying to bring the centre-back to St James’ Park.
In the end, Newcastle were priced out of signing Guehi, who remained at Crystal Palace.
However, rumours of a move away from Selhurst Park have continued due to his contract situation. Guehi’s current deal expires in 2026, which means Crystal Palace probably need to sell this year.
Guehi joining Newcastle United in January is unlikely, with the Magpies held back by PSR. Any deal would need to be offset by a departure before June 30th, which could lead to another transfer scramble like last year.

Newcastle United’s current Marc Guehi stance
But with Guehi attracting interest from the likes of Chelsea this month, there is a fresh chance that the 24-year-old could be on the move.
Toon officials are keeping an eye on the situation, as they prepare to be reactive rather than proactive.
That is according to the Athletic, who report that Newcastle United will consider whether or not they can match any bids that come in for Guehi this month.
The Athletic have been told that Guehi to Newcastle United is unlikely this month, but not impossible.
Newcastle think Guehi can be a difference maker for them, but PSR could force them to miss out during the January transfer window.
Newcastle United can afford to wait until the summer
Just a few months ago, there was a clear need for Newcastle United to sign a player like Guehi. The Magpies were struggling defensively, while it was unclear when Sven Botman would be fit enough to play again.
But now Eddie Howe’s side have improved at the back, while Botman is back in action.
The Dutchman has returned after his ACL injury, and played very well in his first two appearances back at senior level.
His comeback has reduced the need for centre-back reinforcements, despite Newcastle trying to sign Abdukodir Khusanov. However, the Magpies are going to miss out to Manchester City.
They could also miss out on Guehi, which would be a shame. However, it is not a major issue.
Newcastle United are suddenly no longer desperate for centre-back reinforcements, and can afford to wait until the summer when the picture is a bit clearer.
Toon officials will hope that Guehi is still an option in the summer, as he is clearly a player who a lot of people within the club love.
