Newcastle United went big on trying to sign Marc Guehi last summer.
The England international was identified as a top target for Newcastle, who saw a number of bids rejected by Crystal Palace.
Indeed, the saga drew out for what felt like an age.
Guehi was understood to have been keen on the move but the club just couldn’t agree a fee with the Eagles.
Palace chairman Steve Parish publicly called for “superstar money” for the former Swansea defender and Newcastle just couldn’t strike an agreement, much to the frustration of supporters.
Luckily, things have not worked out too badly for Newcastle since. In fact, a solid defence built largely using the options they had last season is what is helping them flourish right now, with only the top three in the Premier League having conceded fewer goals so far this season (22).

Guehi is said to remain of interest to Newcastle, although Chelsea are also believed to be keen.
Now, a fresh and rather surprising update has emerged in regards to his potential transfer fee.
Marc Guehi asking price slashed amid Newcastle United and Chelsea interest

According to The Athletic, a fee of around £40million could be enough to get Palace speaking about the prospect of selling Guehi.
That certainly feels a long way off Parish’s demands for “superstar” money…
Will Marc Guehi leave Crystal Palace in January?
The Chelsea development will no doubt accelerate the rumours suggesting Guehi will be leaving Palace six months after Newcastle’s attempts to sign him.
Given the extents to which Newcastle went to land the player, any news in regards to Guehi is likely to involve them to at least some degree.
However, Palace boss Oliver Glasner recently played down any talk the club could allow one of their key players to leave halfway through what has sometimes been a difficult campaign.
